Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Minotti and Defense Stand Out in 2-0 Shutout Over SLU

Potsdam, NY – For the second time in four days defense was the calling card for the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team as the Golden Knights were able to claim a 2-0 non-league win over St. Lawrence University on Saturday afternoon at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights improved to 10-3-1, extending their unbeaten streak to five games. St. Lawrence fell to 8-5-3. Clarkson heads back to New England next weekend facing Brown on Friday and Yale on Saturday.

Much like the previous meeting on Wednesday, shots were at a premium in the early going, though both teams had some solid chances late in the period. While on the power play, Claire Tyo had some excellent chances on the left side on the doorstep, but Clarkson goaltender Julia Minotti stretched out to make multiple saves. Then in the final seconds, Anne Cherkowski decided instead of dumping the puck to close out the period to skate in for a short-handed try in the waning seconds. The strategy worked out as she got tripped up creating a 4-on-4 to start the second and also put the Knights on the power play.

At the start of the second period, Rhea Hicks nearly converted twice. She just missed a bouncing puck at the bottom of the left circle and just seconds later had another shot denied by the right blocker of SLU goaltender Emma-Sofie Nordstrom. Six minutes later Nordstrom again came up big, in the same spot, this time using a stick to slap aside a shot from Cherkowski, which she did again with a little over four minutes remaining on another stick save against Nicole Gosling.

Nordstrom wasn't the only goalie standing tall, as Minotti, too, made an impressive save late in the period. While on the penalty kills, Tori Verbeek poked the puck out of the St. Lawrence defensive zone and was able to sprint down ice for a breakaway. Verbeek made a couple of moves and went to the left side, but Minotti used her stick and her skate to kick the puck wide. With about a minute remaining, Minotti again kept the game scoreless, denying a backhand from Sarah Marchand just in front of the crease.

Clarkson finally ended the game-long scoreless drought for both teams late in the third period. The faceoff occurred at the right circle in the SLU defensive zone and was cleared out briefly, but the Knights dumped it back in to nearly the same spot. Along the boards, Cherkowski was able to dig the puck out and skated in, dropping a pass off to Rhea Hicks near the goal line. Hicks quickly gave the puck back to Cherkowski, who went over the shoulder of Nordstrom and off the underside of the crossbar at the 14:00 mark to make it 1-0.

St. Lawrence looked to tie the game in the final two minutes on a 3-on-3 rush with Katina Duscio finding space, but Minotti kicked it aside before Duscio and a teammate ended up in the back of the net with Minotti, putting the puck out of the zone for the ensuing faceoff with Nordstrom out of the SLU crease.

The Knights iced the game late as St. Lawrence was forced out of the zone due to being offside. With the puck still in the Clarkson defensive zone near the top of the left circle, Haley Winn took her time to measure the empty net that was 120 feet away, then flipped the puck over the neutral zone defense and into the vacated space to make it a 2-0 final.

Clarkson ended the contest with a 35-27 edge in shots as both teams went 0-for-3 on the power play. Minotti made 27 saves and Nordstrom had 33 stops.
