Riskin's Solid Outing and Mason's 3 RBI Lead Knights Past Ithaca, 5-2

Potsdam, NY – A strong starting effort from sophomore Cole Riskin kept Ithaca College off the board until the ninth inning, and the Clarkson University Baseball team picked up a win in the third game of the series against the Bombers, winning 5-2 Saturday afternoon at Jack Phillips Stadium.

The Golden Knights moved to 10-17 on the season and 8-7 in league games, while Ithaca fell to 20-12 and 9-5. Clarkson faces Oswego State midweek and then takes on St. Lawrence University in a three-game set to close out the regular-season.

Riskin was in control for most of the game, getting help on a fly out that turned into a double play when Joe Pagano threw out a baserunner at third base to end the threat. The Clarkson offense did enough in support of Riskin's effort, scoring one in the second and one in the third for an early 2-0 lead. Robert Whalen led off the bottom of the second with a line drive double down the right field line and he then scored on a single by Cam Jerrett for the first run of the contest. In an inning later, Joe Pagano tripled to right when Garrett Callaghan attempted to make a diving play near the line but the ball got past him to the wall. On the very next pitch Pagano scored, as Colby Brouillette lifted a sacrifice fly to left to give Clarkson a 2-0 edge.

In the bottom of the fifth, Aidan Kuefner and Caleb Doyle each singled and then moved to second and third on a sac bunt. After an intentional walk to load the bases, the next hitter popped up to put two outs on the board for Ithaca, but James Mason ripped a double to left to score a pair and put the Green and Gold up 4-0. In the seventh, the Knights added another run on an RBI groundout by Mason.

Ithaca picked up a couple of runs in the ninth. A throwing error allowed the Bombers to put a runner in scoring position and Colin Shashaty eventually scored on a sac fly. A single from Matt Curtis plated another unearned run, but a fielder's choice ended the contest.

Riskin picked up his second win of the year, allowing six hits and a pair of walks with three strikeouts over 6.2 innings of work. Hunter Geisler tossed the last 2.1 innings, giving up four hits and two unearned runs. Offensively, Jake Millich and Cam Jerrett each had two hits, Mason drove in three, and Pagano scored twice. At the plate for Ithaca, both Louis Fabbo and Collin Feeney recorded three-hit games.
