Geiger Tops 100 Career Points with Huge Game in Knights' Win Over Sixth-Ranked SLU

Canton, NY – Senior Sebastian Geiger scored four goals in the first quarter to help the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team roll out to an early lead, and the Golden Knights never looked back as the team kept its playoff hopes alive with a 14-9 victory over sixth-ranked St. Lawrence University on Wednesday night.

The Golden Knights improved to 10-3 overall and 2-3 in conference, with both of their league victories coming against nationally-ranked foes, while St. Lawrence dropped to 11-3 and 3-2. Clarkson closes out the home portion of the 2023 schedule on Saturday when the team hosts Vassar College.

While Clarkson went more than seven minutes at the start of the game without a goal, the Knights made up for it with five scores in a stretch of less than five minutes in the first quarter to take an early 5-1 lead. Tyler Hall found Geiger twice at 7:18 and 5:12, and Geiger scored again at 4:21 and from Alex Seiler at 2:38. St. Lawrence recovered with two early going in the second before Geiger could score again, and the Saints added two more to get within one to put the tally at 6-5.

However, the Knights' defense buckled down for the next 23-plus minutes, only allowing two more goals in that run while building a larger lead. In the third, the Saints had 11 shots and controlled the turf with 12 groundballs, but the Clarkson defense caused five turnovers and did enough to maintain the gap.

The fourth quarter was more of the same, as Clarkson's Jacob Mattice stopped seven of his 16 shots in the final period, denying a late charge by St. Lawrence. Bryan Penney scored an empty-net goal at 3:11 and Thomas Fiebich ran in unimpeded in the final minute, as St. Lawrence took its goalie out in hopes of causing turnovers and providing its offense with extra chances.

After missing most of the season due to injury, Geiger reached the 100-point mark for his career later than expected, but he did so with a flourish on Wednesday, scoring eight points on seven goals and an assist, just one point shy of his career-high with the Knights. Tyler Hall produced three assists, Bryan Penney scored three goals, and Thomas Fiebich scored three points with two goals and one assist.

For St. Lawrence, Mark Mahoney scored four points with two goals and two assists and also added five groundballs, and Ben Hutchinson scored four goals.
