Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Knights Win Again, 16-10 Over Vassar

Potsdam, NY – Rallying from a two-goal deficit at the half, the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team dropped in six goals during the third quarter and then added two more at the start of the fourth to claim a 16-10 win over Vassar College in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights improved to 11-3 overall and 3-3 in the Liberty League, while Vassar fell to 7-8 and 0-6. Clarkson travels to Skidmore College next weekend for its final regular-season contest. With a win next weekend against the Thoroughbreds, Clarkson would clinch the third seed in the Liberty League Tournament, as the team has head-to-head wins against the other two teams with which it is currently tied.

The game was tight in terms of scoring in the first quarter as neither team ever had more than a one goal advantage. In the second, the teams again traded goals, but in the final few minutes Troy Santise scored twice for the Brewers, allowing Vassar to head to the locker room with a 7-5 advantage.

That lead would evaporate in the third, as the Golden Knights went on a 6-0 run in the quarter. The big turning point came in the final of the period as Thomas Fiebich scored twice in a stretch of 17 seconds, first finding the back of the net with 53 seconds to go and then scoring again on a pass from Joe Porto with 36 seconds remaining on the clock, giving Clarkson an 11-7 lead.

At the start of the fourth, Bryan Penney scored on the man-up at 11:53 and Sebastian Geiger picked up a goal at 11:32 to extend the margin to six, 13-7. That proved to be the final gap between the two teams as Clarkson held on for the victory.

Fiebich's first point of the game was the 100th of his career, joining teammates Bryan Penney and Sebastian Geiger in that club this year, and he finished with seven points overall on five goals and two assists to go along with six groundballs. Penney scored six points on three goals and three assists and also snagged four groundballs and caused two turnovers. Joe Kelly picked up five points with three goals and two helpers, and Andrew Kearney had four points on two goals and two assists. Matt Szwagulinski also scooped up six groundballs, and Matthew Hansen won 21 of his 29 tries on faceoffs, picking up a game-high 11 groundballs.

For Vassar, Troy Santise scored three goals, Riley Olds scored twice, and Dan Negron had three points on two goals and an assist. Solomon Hess forced three turnovers and had six groundballs, and Eli Sherman also had five groundballs.

Clarkson finished the game with a 59-50 lead in shots (36-21 in shots on goal), a 41-31 edge in groundballs, and won 22 of 30 faceoffs. Jacob Mattice made 11 saves in 58 minutes before being relieved by Henry O'Brien for the final two minutes of the game. Jack Bagin stopped 20 shots for the Brewers.
