Page Delivers With 10 Scoreless Innings in Clarkson's Sweep of St. Lawrence

Canton, NY – Senior Riley Page tossed 10 scoreless innings, including a complete game shutout in the opener and the final three frames of game two, to help the Clarkson University Softball team to a sweep of St. Lawrence University, 3-0 and 8-6 on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights moved to 12-8 on the season and opened Liberty League play with two wins while the Saints fell to 3-15 and 0-2. Clarkson has a longer road trip set for Sunday, as the team travels to take on Rensselaer.

In the first game, base runners were scarce in the early going. It wasn't until the third that either team put a runner in scoring position, but each starting pitcher escaped with no blemishes to the scoreboard. In the fourth, the Knights had their first real challenge of the game, but a runner was thrown out at the plate, so it wouldn't be until the fifth inning that Clarkson pushed any runs across. Kaya Johnson singled up the middle and advanced to third on a groundout and passed ball, though Bridget Twaits's triple to left-center would have scored Johnson from any base. Twaits then came around on a single through the infield by Emma Sabourin to put the Knights up 2-0. Clarkson picked up another run in the sixth when pinch-runner Elissa Uveino scored on an error after coming in for Zoey Kovach, who had tripled to right-center.

Those three runs were more than enough for Riley Page, as she pitched to contact all day, allowing just five hits with no walks and two strikeouts over seven innings to earn the win. Sabourin finished 3-for-4 and Kovach was 2-for-3 in game one.

Game two saw Clarkson playing from behind in the late innings, but it was the Knights that actually scored first. A two-out double by Bridget Kerwin scored Twaits to put the score at 1-0, but the Saints would tie it in the bottom of the third on a bases loaded fielder's choice. In the fourth, the Saints scored twice on back-to-back hits from Stella VanGee and Vivian Johnson, giving St. Lawrence a 3-1 edge.

Clarkson would tie the score in the sixth as Kovach doubled in Fitzpatrick and Kaya Johnson singled in another run to make it 3-3. St. Lawrence seemingly put the game away in the bottom half of the sixth when the Saints plated three. Cora Ferguson tripled home a pair and then Olivia Caporale hit a sac fly for the Saints' sixth run of the game.

The Knights did enough in the seventh to tie the score and send the game to extras. Kerwin started things off with a one-out single and Devin Fitzpatrick also reached on an infield single. Kovach then singled to center, but an error in the outfield provided both Kerwin and Fitzpatrick time to score to make it 6-5, while Kovach advanced all the way to third. A groundout by Elizabeth Greco plated Kovach to tie the game.

Riley Page came on in relief in the bottom of the seventh and mowed through the St. Lawrence lineup three more times, holding the Saints scoreless in that half and then in two extra frames. Clarkson picked up the runs it would need in the top of the ninth as Page reached on an error and scored on a double from Kovach. Pinch-runner Rylee Broadwell tacked on a key run when she scored on a fielder's choice by Kaya Johnson.

Page allowed two hits and struck out five over the final three innings in relief of Devin Fitzpatrick, who gave up two earned runs and struck out six in the first six innings of the contest. Kovach finished 3-for-5 with two doubles, two runs scored, and two more driven in. Fitzpatrick, Molly Pezzano, Greco, and Kerwin each added two hits in game two for the Knights.
