Knights Come Up Short in Doubleheader at RPI, 3-0 and 7-3

Troy, NY – Two low-scoring games, including an extra-inning affair, did not go the way of the Clarkson University Softball team on Sunday, as the Golden Knights suffered a doubleheader Liberty League sweep at Rensselaer, dropping the first game 3-0 and losing the second contest in eight innings 7-3.

The Golden Knights fell to 12-10 overall and 2-2 in the Liberty League, while the Engineers improved to 19-5 and 4-0. Clarkson visits Oswego State for a non-league doubleheader Wednesday and is then back home for the weekend with doubleheaders against RIT and University of Rochester.

In the opener, Clarkson put runners in scoring position in four of the first five innings, including runners on third in both the first and second, but the Knights were unable to score in those opportunities. Rensselaer would get all the runs it would need in the bottom half of the second as Madison Brooks plated a pair with a single to right. In the fifth, the Engineers would pick up an insurance run as Catherine Worthington came around to score after singling, stealing second, and advancing to third on a groundout, as an extra ground out from Callista Adorno pushed Worthington home.

Bridget Twaits had two of Clarkson's four hits in the game, while Zoey Kovach reached twice via a hit and a walk. Devin Fitzpatrick pitched well, giving up just a single earned run in six innings on six hits and a walk while striking out five.

Game two saw RPI jump out to an early lead with two doubles in the bottom of the second. Liv Vizzini reached on a one-out double down the left field line, and she came home on a similarly placed double by Sydney Speanburg. In the top of the Elissa Uveino hit an inside the park home run to tie the game, and the Knights picked up the lead in the fifth. Uveino reached on an infield hit and moved to second on a sac bunt. After a Molly Pezzano single put runners on the corner, Zoey Kovach drove in both with a double to left. In the bottom half of the frame, Erin Askins tripled to right-center and scored on a throwing error to put the Engineers back within one.

Clarkson looked to close things out in the bottom of the seventh as the first two hitters were retired easily. However, Madison Brooks kept things alive by reaching on a single and then stealing second. Askins followed with another triple to right-center, but she was stranded at third, sending the game to extras. RPI would close out the contest in its first extra at bat, as the team loaded the bases on singles from Gabby Comeau, Callista Adorno, and Alex Ledger. The Engineers then walked it off with a one-out grand slam by Sydney Speanburg.

For Clarkson, Katy Aldous and Elissa Uveino each went 2-or-3 in the game. Riley Page was the tough-luck losing pitcher for Clarkson, tossing seven-plus innings and striking out four in her complete game effort.
