Big Third Quarter Helps Clarkson Come Back for 12-10 Win Over Geneseo

Potsdam, NY – Despite digging a considerable hole in the first half, the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team scored nine unanswered goals to record a come-from-behind victory against SUNY Geneseo, claiming a 12-10 win on Saturday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights stayed unbeaten at 6-0 overall while SUNY Geneseo fell to 4-3. Clarkson will look to remain undefeated when it faces Plattsburgh State on Wednesday.

Geneseo's offense came out humming and had a 6-1 lead in just 20 minutes, as Clarkson struggled to keep up with some quick offensive sets. Clarkson eventually righted the ship, sparked a Chris Albrecht goal where the junior got possession in the defensive end for a clear and ran down the field to convert at 9:22. That began a stretch where Clarkson outscored Geneseo 3-1 in the final 10 minutes of the second quarter.

Both the Golden Knights' offense and defense were solid in the third quarter, as Clarkson outscored Geneseo 6-0 in that period. Thomas Fiebich got things rolling with a man-up goal, and Christian Canino connected with Fiebich for the go-ahead goal at the 7:16 mark, putting the Green and Gold up 8-7. Clarkson continued to produce on offense with two more goals in the third, and then opened the fourth with two more scores for a 12-7 lead. In that stretch, Clarkson forced numerous turnovers on the defensive end, and grad student Jacob Mattice denied every shot on goal that came his way.

Geneseo ended a 33-plus minute scoreless stretch with a goal at 6:49 in the fourth, and the visitors were able to put two more tallies on the scoreboard late, but Clarkson was able to win the faceoff and run out the clock to pick up the victory.

Thomas Fiebich produced five points on three goals and two assists while also adding in four groundballs. Christian Canino contributed three points with two goals and one helper, and both Bryan Penney and Tyler Hall scored twice. Matt Szwagulinski caused three turnovers and scooped up four groundballs.

For Geneseo, William McCumiskey had four points on two goals and two assists and Christian Marcello, Jr. notched three points. Both Brady Sullivan and Jimmy Atkinson chipped in two points. Kevin Ehli also had two caused turnovers and two groundballs.

Overall, Clarkson had a narrow advantage in shots (51-45), but that lead expanded for shots on goal (32-22). The two teams were tied in both groundballs (21-21) and faceoffs (13-13). Jacob Mattice made 12 stops in the crease for the Golden Knights, and Mark Pav was strong with 20 saves for Geneseo.
