Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Knights Remain Unbeaten with 13-5 Victory Over Plattsburgh State

Plattsburgh – After a relatively slow start, the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team clamped down defensively and allowed its opponents to score just three goals in the final 52 minutes as the Golden Knights cruised to a 13-5 win over Plattsburgh State on Wednesday afternoon.

The Golden Knights pushed their record to 7-0 on the season while Plattsburgh State fell to 2-5 overall. Clarkson opens up Liberty League play this weekend when the team travels to take on Ithaca College on Saturday.

The two teams essentially traded goals for the first 20 minutes of the contest, as neither could produce much in the way of momentum. That changed midway through the second quarter when Tyler Hall and Vincent Lavarnway connected for a score at 7:45. Just 29 seconds later, Christian Canino scored unassisted to give the Knights their first two-goal advantage of the game (5-3). Less than two minutes later, Bryan Penney and Thomas Fiebich combined for a goal and then in the final 90 seconds of the period Alex Seiler and Matt Reilly recorded goals to put the Knights up 8-3.

The second quarter was decidedly in favor of Clarkson, as the Knights won five of the six faceoffs, held a 13-6 lead in groundballs, and outshot the Cardinals 13-5.

The momentum built at the end of the half continued into the third quarter as Clarkson kept the Cardinals off the scoreboard for the entirety of the period. Meanwhile, the Knights steadily built their advantage, eventually reaching double digits by the end of the quarter when Alex Seiler converted with 3:58 remaining.

Plattsburgh finally ended its scoreless drought early in the fourth, but the team had gone nearly 25 minutes without a goal. During that stretch without a score, the Golden Knights held Plattsburgh to just five total shots, with only three on goal. Only a late penalty allowed the Cardinals to score more than one goal over the final 39 minutes.

Connor Matthews scored three goals and Alex Seiler added three points with two goals and an assist. Matt Reilly also scored a pair of goals, while both Andrew Kearney and Thomas Fiebich each had two points with a goal and an assist. Matthew Hansen was 11-for-14 on faceoffs and had eight groundballs. Both Steve Kay and Chris Albrecht caused two turnovers for the Knights.

Clarkson held significant advantages in shots (42-27), groundballs (38-26), and faceoffs (13-7), with the numbers getting closer late in the game. Jacob Mattice made 10 saves for Clarkson and Dan Clements stopped 13 shots for Plattsburgh.
