Knights Drop Liberty League Tournament Opener, 7-5, to Ithaca

Ithaca, NY – Through five frames, the Clarkson University Baseball team was in a solid position to advance to the winners' bracket of the Liberty League Tournament, but host Ithaca College put up five in the bottom of the sixth to come away with a 7-5 victory over the Golden Knights on day one of the Liberty League Tournament at Ithaca's Freeman Field.

The Golden Knights will now have to battle through the losers' bracket in hopes of advancing to Saturday's Championship Round, beginning with an elimination game at 10:00 am Friday against RIT.

Ithaca put up two runs in the bottom of the first thanks to a two-out, two-run double from Connor Pedersen, but the Bombers' bats were otherwise quieted by Kyle Locklear. The senior righty only allowed one more runner to get into scoring position over the next four innings, while the Clarkson offense got to work.

In the top of the third, Caleb Doyle began a rally with a one-out single, which was followed by another single from Kent Wilson. Colby Brouillette then laced a double to right to score Doyle, and Wilson came home on a sacrifice fly from Mike Nee to tie the game 2-2. In the fourth, Sean Eddington led off with a walk and a single from Tommy Bianchi put runners on the corners, and Michael Tito drove in Eddington when he reached on a fielder's choice to make it 3-2. An inning later, Clarkson again had runners on the corners with two out, and back-to-back singles from Joe Pagano and Eddington put two more runs on the board for the Knights, giving the Green and Gold a 5-2 advantage.

In the bottom of the sixth, a leadoff walk got things going for the Bombers as the first four hitters of the inning reached. Pedersen drove in one with a single and Matt Fabian singled in another run too put the tally at 5-4. Ethan Rothstein then tripled in a pair to give Ithaca the lead, and a sacrifice fly Riley Brawdy gave Ithaca some additional cushion with another run.

Clarkson threatened in the seventh and eighth innings with two runners on, but came up empty in both frames. In the ninth, Brouillette and Pagano singled to give the Knights runners on first and second with one out, but Ithaca's Garrett Bell struck out the last two hitters of the game to earn the save.

Clarkson's Joe Pagano finished the game 4-for-5, while Bianchi, Brouillette, and Doyle each registered two hits for the Knights, with Doyle also scoring twice. Pedersen was 2-for-2 and walked twice, driving in four runs for the Bombers, and Rothstein plated two in a 2-for-4 effort for Ithaca.

Kyle Lambert picked up the win for Ithaca despite allowing five runs (three earned) on nine hits in 6.1 innings of work, and Bell tossed the final inning for the save. Locklear struck out four and gave up three hits before being lifted in the sixth, and reliever Derrick Lewis took the loss during Ithaca's breakout inning.
