Knights Rally For 7-6 Win Over RIT in Elimination Game in Liberty League Tournament

Ithaca, NY – Without the benefit of a hit, the Clarkson University Baseball team was able to push a run across in the top of the ninth inning to break a tie as the Golden Knights survived for another game with a 7-6 win over RIT in the third game of the Liberty League Tournament Friday morning at Ithaca College's Freeman Field.

The Golden Knights moved to 12-18 on the season in eliminating RIT, and will await the loser of Ithaca and University of Rochester in the second elimination of the game this afternoon.

Clarkson got things going in the first inning with three runs, as Caleb Doyle started with an infield single and Kent Wilson followed with a single through the right side. After Colby Brouillette reached on an error, Mike Nee singled to center to plate Doyle, and then Tommy Bianchi singled in a pair to put the Knights up 3-0. A solo home run from Patrick Blackall saw RIT get one run back in the bottom half of the inning.

The offenses were quiet until the fourth. Joe Pagano led off the top of the inning with a single and Tommy Bianchi pushed him to third with a single to center. Cam Jerrett's fielder's choice then scored Pagano to make it 4-1. The next half inning, Colby Brouillette doubled in Kent Wilson for a 5-1 Clarkson advantage.

Clarkson's Nicholas Hofacker allowed just two hits in the first six innings, but the Tigers got to him in the bottom of the seventh with back-to-back singles being followed by a home run off the left field foul pole from Nic Stagnitta, pulling the score to 5-4. Hofacker left the game, but RIT wasn't finished, scoring two more on a triple from Will Porter and an opposite field double by John Bagley, giving the Tigers a 6-5 lead.

Clarkson took little time in tying the game, as Tommy Bianchi hit a one-out double and moved to third on a single up the middle from Sean Gill. A sacrifice fly by Cam Jerrett plated Bianchi to tie the game 6-6.

In the top of the ninth, Clarkson took the lead again without recording a hit. Caleb Doyle reached on an error, Kent Wilson walked, and Colby Brouillette walked to load the bases. Mike Nee then drove in the go-ahead run the hard way, getting hit off the side of the helmet to force in the run. In the bottom half of the inning, the Tigers got a lead off hit, but the next three runners were retired in order without incident.

Hofacker finished with four strikeouts in six innings, giving up five hits, but it was Griffin Tubbs who earned the win by tossing the final three innings of relief. Tommy Bianchi drove in a pair with three hits, while Gill was 2-for-5. Both Nee and Jerrett also drove in two runs for Clarkson.
