Knights Drop Pair to Ithaca

Ithaca, NY – Senior Olivia Zoeller struck out 11 over six innings, but her effort was not enough as the Clarkson University Softball team dropped its rescheduled doubleheader against Ithaca College 5-3 and 12-0 on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights saw their mark fall to 7-9 overall and 0-2 in conference games, while Ithaca edged up to 10-7 and 2-0. Clarkson heads back home for a doubleheader against Union College on Sunday afternoon.

Saturday's opener was halted two times due to rain delays, slowing a fast-paced first contest. Zoeller struck out two in each of the first four innings against the Bombers, but Ithaca finally put some runs together in the fifth inning. One run came home on an error, another was plated on a sacrifice fly, and a two-run homer by Emma Kindblom put the Bombers up 4-0. Clarkson ended its scoreless run in the bottom of the sixth, as Sam Short reached on a leadoff walk and then came around on Sarah Vaccaro's two-run homer. The Knights added one more run in the sixth when Becky Kennedy-Titsworth singled home Kayla Robert to put the score at 4-3.

Ithaca added another run on a single from Kira Flegenheimer, but Clarkson was unable to respond in the bottom half of the seventh after bringing the tying run to the plate.

Zoeller finished with 11 strikeouts in six innings, giving up three hits and three walks. Vaccaro was 4-for-4 at the plate with two runs batted in and a run scored, accounting for most of Clarkson's six hits. Riley Piromalli picked up the win, giving up two runs on three hits and two walks in five innings, and Melody Kappel earned the save, tossing the final two innings.

Game two saw Ithaca score in bunches, putting up five runs in the first, two in the second, and five more in the third for an early 12-0 lead. Clarkson never challenged offensively, producing four scattered hits in five at bats.
