Knights Smack Three Homers and Zoeller Fans 10 in Sweep of Union

Potsdam, NY – Three home runs in the opener and another gem from Olivia Zoeller allowed the Clarkson University Softball team to recover from its first Liberty League losses on Saturday with a Sunday sweep of Union College, downing the Dutchwomen 15-6 and 5-1 in conference action Sunday afternoon at Scott Field.

The Golden Knights evened their marks at 9-9 overall and 2-2 in league games while Union dropped to 9-5 and 0-4. Clarkson will host a non-league doubleheader against Oswego State on Wednesday afternoon.

In the opener, Union scored runs in each of its first four at bats, while the Golden Knights posted crooked numbers in the second, third, fifth, and sixth innings. The Dutchwomen picked up a run in the first and another in the second before the Knights got on the board in the bottom half of the second. Zoey Kovach and Becky Kennedy-Titsworth reached on singles to set up Riley Page, who homered just right of straight away center to put the Knights up 3-2. Clarkson grabbed another run when Sarah Vaccaro doubled in Sam Short.

The Dutchwomen regained the lead in the third as Karson Saunders hit a three-run homer to left, making the score 5-4. That lead was brief, however, as the Knights picked up two runs, one coming in on a Page ground out and another coming around on a Bridget Twaits ground out. Union tied the game in the fourth once again as Amanda Granato doubled in a run.

After two quiet half innings, Clarkson opened up offensively in the fifth and sixth innings. Olivia Zoeller singled in a run to put the Knights up by one, but the big blow came off the bat of Devin Fitzpatrick who homered to left center with the bases loaded for an 11-6 Clarkson lead. In the bottom half of the sixth, Sam Short singled through the right side to score Tatum Morris and Sarah Vaccaro ended the game with a three-run homer to left center, putting Clarkson up by nine.

Fitzpatrick earned the win in relief with two scoreless frames and also finished 2-for-2 with four RBI. Vaccaro drove in four with two hits and Page did the same. Kovach was 3-for-4 with two runs scored, Zoeller went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI, Sam Short scored three times, Kayla Robert walked four times, and Becky Kennedy-Titsworth scored twice and was 2-for-4. For Union, Karson Saunders was 2-for-3 with a homer, two runs scored, and three driven in.

Game two saw Olivia Zoeller strike out 10 in seven innings of work, giving up just four hits and a walk with one unearned run in her fifth victory of the season. She was provided the lead in the bottom of the first as Sarah Vaccaro reached on an infield single and Kayla Robert extended the rally by getting to first on an error from the Union shortstop. Kovach then doubled to left to score one, and Page singled to plate another for a 2-0 Clarkson lead.

Things were quiet for the next few frames, but the Knights picked up three insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth. With runners on second and third and two outs, Kovach delivered again with a hard single up the middle, sending both Vaccaro and Short home for a 4-0 Clarkson advantage. Kovach then scored herself on a base hit to center from Riley Page. Union did get a run back in the sixth as Amanda Granato and Karson Saunders had back-to-back hits. After Saunders safety, Granato was able to run home on an errant throw back to the infield.

In addition to her excellent pitching outing, Zoeller was 2-for-3 at the dish with two doubles. Kovach went 2-for-3 with three RBI and Page was 3-for-3 with two driven in.
