Knights Throw Second Straight No-No, Vaccaro Collects Six Hits in Sweep of Potsdam

Potsdam, NY – For the second time in five days, the Clarkson University Softball team saw a combined no-hitter thrown, as the Golden Knights swept a doubleheader from SUNY Potsdam 8-0 and 12-4 on Wednesday afternoon.

The Golden Knights evened their overall mark at 7-7 with their fifth and sixth straight victories, while the Bears dropped to 0-15 on the year. Clarkson will be back in action this weekend when the team opens up Liberty League play hosting Ithaca College and Union College.

In the opener, Olivia Zoeller and Emily McBath combined for a six-inning no-hitter, the second time that the duo kept the opposition quiet in the hit column in the last week. Zoeller stayed in for five innings, striking out 11 and allowing only a single base runner with a hit by pitch. McBath closed out the game with a scoreless sixth, giving up just a free pass with walk and retiring the other three hitters via groundout.

Clarkson opened the scoring in the second as Kayla Robert singled to center and moved up a base on a misplay by the centerfielder. Elizabeth Greco then singled to center to plate Robert, giving the Knights a 1-0 lead. An inning later, Sarah Vaccaro singled in Sam Short to put Clarkson up 2-0.

The Knights pulled away in the later innings, scoring four in the fifth and two more in the sixth. Clarkson strung together five hits in the fifth to tally four runs, including a double from Sarah Vaccaro and a two-run double by Kayla Robert. Greco drove in the fourth run of the frame with a sacrifice fly. In the sixth, Vaccaro again drove in a run with a single down the left field line and then scored on a wild pitch for Clarkson's eighth run.

Six Clarkson players finished with multiple hits in the contest despite going without an at bat in the seventh. Sam Short was 3-for-4 with three runs scored, Sarah Vaccaro drove in three and scored twice with her 3-for-4 effort, and Kayla Robert scored twice and drove in two while going 3-for-3.

In game two, Potsdam was able to record its first hit in the second inning and pushed a run across after a pair of errors in the Clarkson outfield. However, the Knights took the lead for good in the top of the third. Olivia Zoeller opened the rally with a single, stole second, and then reached third on a sacrifice bunt. Sarah Vaccaro doubled Zoeller in and then scored along with Kayla Robert on two-run triple by Zoey Kovach. A dropped pop up by the Potsdam catcher allowed Kovach to come in to put Clarkson up 4-1.

Potsdam took advantage of another error in the bottom half of the third to plate two, but the Knights offense opened up in the final innings, scoring three in the fifth, four in the sixth, and one more in the seventh for good measure. Becky Kennedy-Titsworth singled in Kayla Robert in the fifth and Katy Aldous doubled in a pair to put the score at 7-3. Potsdam picked up a run on a solo homer in the bottom half of the fifth, only to see Clarkson counter with four more in the sixth. Riley Page delivered a two-out, RBI-double for the first run, Bridget Twaits singled in another, and Zoeller drove in a run with a triple while Page also scored on a wild pitch. The seventh saw Kovach drive in another run with a single to center, scoring Vaccaro once again.

Six players again had multi-hit games for the Knights, as the Green and Gold pounded out 18 hits in the contest. Vaccaro finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored, Kovach was 3-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored, while Zoeller, Robert, Kennedy-Titsworth, and Page had two hits apiece. In the pitching circle, Devin Fitzpatrick tossed the first three innings and gave up four hits and three runs, all unearned, as the starter. Riley Page picked up the win in relief, throwing the middle two frames with three strikeouts, and Zoeller closed out the game, fanning five in two innings and giving up a single hit.
