Knights Drop Pair to Rochester

Rochester, NY – Held to just six hits over 12 innings, the Clarkson University Softball team struggled to produce much offense on Sunday as the team dropped a doubleheader to University of Rochester, 3-0 and 8-0.

The Golden Knights fell back below .500 at 13-14 overall and moved to 4-7 in league games, while Rochester moved to 18-12 and 10-0 in conference games. Clarkson is scheduled for a makeup game against St. Lawrence University on Tuesday and then closes out conference play at Skidmore College next Friday.

In the opener, Clarkson recorded four hits in the contest, but never was able to put a runner in scoring position. Rochester picked up all three of its runs in the same inning, the bottom of the second. Loren Castilloux reached and then came home when Hunter Gilbreath hit a two-run homer. Molly Mason then tripled on a fly ball to right that was lost in the sun, and she scored on a dropped ball in center.

Olivia Zoeller allowed only six hits in six innings, striking out four against zero walks. Emily Sharlach tossed a seven-inning complete game four-hitter, fanning five with no walks.

Game two was a close affair until the fifth as Rochester scored twice in the second but was held without a run in the other three innings. The Yellowjackets first scored on a Molly Mason single and then added another run thanks to a wild pitch. With the score 2-0 through four innings, Rochester ended the game early with a surprising fifth frame. Allison Beckwith doubled in two runs as the key blow, and the game ended with a bases loaded walk as Rochester scored six runs on five hits and an error. Clarkson's offense was held to only two hits in the game, but the Knights did have three runners in scoring position against Rochester starter Lauren Keys. Keys finished with three strikeouts and allowed only two hits with no walks in five innings.
