Knights Walk Off With 2-1 Win Over Saints

Potsdam, NY – Two errors in the eighth and 13 strikeouts from Olivia Zoeller allowed the Clarkson University Softball team to pick up a 2-1 victory over St. Lawrence in Liberty League action Tuesday evening at Scott Field.

The Golden Knights evened their overall mark at 14-14 and moved to 5-7 in conference games, while St. Lawrence fell to 16-13 and 4-8. Clarkson closes out the Liberty League season on Friday at Skidmore and then returns for a pair of doubleheaders against Middlebury and St. John Fisher on Saturday and Monday, respectively.

The two teams combined for just eight hits over eight innings and with such little offense, each team had to take advantage of miscues. The biggest errors came in the eighth inning as Clarkson was able to score the winning run in the bottom of the frame. With two down, Kayla Robert lifted a fly ball to deep right, but the ball dropped on an error by the outfielder and Robert ended up on second. The next hitter, Zoey Kovach, then hit a grounder to short where the infielder gloved the ball, but the throw across the diamond was dropped and rolled away, allowing Robert to score from second.

Earlier in the game, St. Lawrence struck first when Clarkson committed back-to-back errors in the top of the second, but the Knights were able to tie the score in the third when Sarah Vaccaro reached on a two-out double and then came in on a single by Robert. Neither team had a runner on third for the final five innings until Robert scored the game-winner.

Olivia Zoeller finished with 13 strikeouts over eight innings, walking just one and allowing three hits with one unearned run for her seventh win of the campaign. Sofia Berryhill took the loss for the Saints, throwing 7.2 innings with four strikeouts.
