Knights Upended by Vassar, 14-8

Poughkeepsie, NY – Holding advantages in virtually every category but the one that counts most, the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team suffered a 14-8 defeat at Vassar College in Liberty League play on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights fell to 10-5 on the season and 1-5 in the Liberty League while Vassar edged above .500 to 7-6 overall and 2-4 in league contests. Clarkson will close out the regular season next weekend with a home game against Skidmore College.

Clarkson topped Vassar in shots (51-36), shots on goal (27-22), groundballs (40-29), and face-offs (16-9), but Vassar's goalkeeper Jack Bagin made 19 saves to keep the Golden Knights' offense in check, especially in the fourth quarter when the Knights were held scoreless despite 16 attempts at the frame.

The Brewers never trailed in Saturday's contest, getting a score in the first minute and then making sure that they held the lead with two goals in the final 90 seconds of the first, rushing out to a 6-3 advantage in the first 15 minutes. Clarkson scored the first two goals of the second to get back within one, but every time the Knights challenged, the Brewers had an answer offensively.

At the start of the third, Clarkson opened things up with a man-up goal from Matt Reilly, pulling the Green and Gold to within one, 8-7. However, the Knights would score only once more in the final 29 minutes as Vassar pulled away in the fourth for a six-goal win.

Reilly scored two goals while both Sebastian Geiger and Brad Wiley had two points with a goal and an assist each. Bryan Penny, Max Hoffer, Tyler Hall, and Alex Seiler accounted for one goal each, and Penney also had six groundballs. Matthew Hansen won 16 of his 23 face-off tries and also had 10 groundballs, and defensively both Connor Borchardt and Matt Szwagulinski each had four groundballs. Jacob Mattice made eight saves in the Clarkson crease.

For Vassar, Logan Hyde scored five goals and Troy Santise scored three goals along with two assists. Both Riley Olds and Ian Zumpano also scored three points with two goals and an assist each. Solomon Hess led the team in groundballs with nine while also causing two turnovers.
