Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Yonko Makes 19 Saves on Senior Day to Lead Clarkson Past Skidmore, 13-8

Potsdam, NY – Never trailing in the final home game of the year, the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team downed Skidmore College 13-8 on Saturday afternoon's Senior Day at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights improved to 11-5 overall and 2-5 in the Liberty League while Skidmore dropped to 5-9 and 0-7.

While Saturday was a celebration of the Clarkson's Senior Class of 2022, it was the Knights' juniors that were busy in the first quarter. Sebastian Geiger and Thomas Fiebich combined for six points on the Knights' first four goals, with Geiger scoring twice and assisted on two others as Clarkson rolled out to a 4-2 lead in the first quarter. The second was quiet as each team only scored one goal to put the tally at 5-3 at the break.

Skidmore challenged the Knights several times in the third and fourth quarters, cutting the margin to one on four occasions, but Clarkson always had an answer for the Thoroughbreds. Leading by just one near the midway point of the final quarter, Clarkson scored four times in the final six and a half minutes to put the game away. Matt Reilly scored at 6:31 to return the advantage to two, and then Fiebich and Bryan Penney scored with under three minutes remaining to put the margin at four. Alex Seiler put an exclamation point on the victory with a goal off a pass from KJ Sarni in the final minute to close out the contest.

Senior Matt Yonko was strong in the Golden Knights' crease, stopping 19 shots against just eight goals allowed in 60 minutes as Skidmore held a 48-42 advantage in shots and 27-24 lead in shots on goal.

Thomas Fiebich led the Knights on offense with six points on four goals and two assists and Sebastian Geiger ended up with five points on three goals and two assists. KJ Sarni (1-2-3) and Matt Reilly (2-1-3) each added three points and Bryan Penney tacked on two goals. Max Hoffer had three groundballs, Matt Szwagulinski added three caused turnovers and three groundballs, and Matthew Hansen won 16 of 24 face-offs with a team-best nine groundballs.

For Skidmore, Jon Bouvier and Ben Gonsalves each scored two goals, with the former also contributing three groundballs. Jack Fitzpatrick led the team with five groundballs, Paul Heffernan caused three turnovers, and Collin Kuester made 11 saves for the Thoroughbreds.
