Knights Split Conference Doubleheader Versus RIT

Rochester, NY – Grad students Michael Mieczkowski and Michael Tito combined to drive in five runs in the opener as the Clarkson University Baseball team splits its conference doubleheader against RIT, winning the opener 8-4 and dropping the second contest 3-2 on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights saw their record go to 5-9 overall and 2-3 in the Liberty League while RIT edged forward to 13-7 overall and 3-2 in conference games. The two teams will play one more league game tomorrow afternoon to decide the series.

In the first game, Mieczkowski opened the scoring in Clarkson's first at bat, delivering a two-out double to plate Mike Nee. RIT responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning, but Mieczkowski tied the contest with a sacrifice fly in the third, scoring Caleb Doyle. In the fifth, Nee put the Knights up by a run with an RBI groundout and was followed by another run-scoring hit from Mieczkowski to give Clarkson a 4-2 edge and the lead for good. Although RIT scored in the bottom half of the fifth, Colby Brouillette drove in what proved to be the winning run in the top of the seventh with a two-out single.

Not that Brouillette's hit ended the game. The Tigers scored a run in the bottom of the eighth to get within one and put additional pressure on the Knights. However, Clarkson was up to the task, getting three key insurance runs in the top of the ninth. Mieczkowski drew a walk, Brouillette doubled, and then Kyle Locklear loaded the bases by reaching on another walk. Tommy Bianchi then forced in a run with a bases loaded walk, and Tito put the game away with a two-run single.

Mieczkowski was 2-for-3 with a run scored and three more driven in, Tito was 3-for-5, and Brouillette was 2-for-5. Caleb Doyle also reached with three walks and scored three times. Griffin Tubbs picked up the win with six strong innings and Derrick Lewis struck out three over three frames to earn the save.

Game two saw the Knights get on the board first once again, accomplishing the feat in the top of the third. Tito started the rally with a two-out bunt single and Doyle followed with a base hit to put two on. Kent Wilson then doubled in both runners to give Clarkson a 2-0 lead. The Knights would hold that advantage until the fifth when John Bagley delivered a two-out, two-run double to tie the contest at 2-2. Neither team could do much more in regulation, pushing the team to extra innings. However, RIT was able to score in its lone at bat of extras as a double, walk, sacrifice bunt and intentional walk loaded the bases. After a strikeout pushed the Tigers to one last hitter, a wild pitch allowed Patrick Blackall, who had opened the inning with a double, to score the game-winning run.

Each team mustered just four hits in game two as both squads' pitchers were effectively wild. Kyle Locklear went 4.1 innings, allowing only two hits and striking out six against four walks. Mateo Sarabia took the loss, but whiffed four in 3.1 innings of work while also allowing only two hits. Jon Opalewski picked up the win for RIT, striking out six and walking four with four hits allowed in eight innings of work.
