Brouillette and Carpin Homer in Knights' 16-10 Loss Versus Plattsburgh

Potsdam, NY – A 10-run fifth seemingly came out of nowhere against the Clarkson University Baseball team, as the Golden Knights suffered a 16-10 defeat versus Plattsburgh State in non-league action Tuesday afternoon at Jack Phillips Stadium.

The Golden Knights fell to 5-10 on the season while Plattsburgh moved to 10-6. Clarkson returns to Liberty League play this weekend as the team is scheduled to host University of Rochester in a three-game set.

Clarkson opened the scoring in the first as Kent Wilson started things off with a one-out single through the right side, setting up designated hitter Colby Brouillette, who delivered a two-run homer to right to put the Knights up 2-0. The Green and Gold tacked on a run in the second as Michael Tito reached with a two-out bunt single and then scampered home on a double to deep center from Caleb Doyle.

Plattsburgh's offense was relatively quiet through the first four frames, going hitless in its first handful of at bats. That changed dramatically in the fifth inning, as the Cardinals strung together nine hits to plate 10 runs, producing some hard hit shots to left and some other base hits that found their way through the infield.

In the sixth, the Cardinals added two more runs with an infield single and another hit that bounded through the left side, but Clarkson was able to respond with a run in the bottom half of the inning as Zachary Carpin homered to left-center. After a quiet seventh, each team scored in the eighth. A solo home run for Steve Messerschmitt made it 13-4, but the Knights knocked in three during their at bat. Kent Wilson opened with a double and was followed by a Colby Brouillette walk, setting up Robert Whalen, who doubled to left to plate one. Evan Lira then sent two more in with a single to left to put the score at 13-7.

Plattsburgh got three runs back in the ninth, but the slugfest continued as the Knights tallied three in the bottom half of the frame. Colby Brouillette doubled to deep right-center to score Caleb Doyle and Kent Wilson, and he later came around on a throwing error when Carpin was hitting. However, that was the final offensive gasp for the Knights, as their late inning rally fell short.

Wilson finished 3-for-5 at the plate with three runs scored, while Brouillette was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and four more driven in. The bottom of Plattsburgh's lineup was the busiest, as Aaron Roman was 4-for-5 with two runs scored and four RBI from the seven-hole, while Messerschmitt was 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles, a home run, three RBI, and four runs scored in the five-spot.

Justin Osborn picked up the win for Plattsburgh, throwing six innings with five hits and two walks allowed, as well as four earned runs. Clarkson's Griffin Racey allowed just two hits and two walks in four innings of work, but he ended up with the loss for the Knights, while seven relievers closed out the final five innings.
