Knights Fall to St. Lawrence, 17-6

Potsdam, NY – Despite an early goal, the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team got off to a slow start and fell behind in the opening quarter, and the Golden Knights were never able to recover in a 17-6 defeat to St. Lawrence University in Liberty League action Tuesday evening at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights saw their record fall to 10-4 overall and 1-4 in the Liberty League while the Saints moved to 11-2 and 4-1. Clarkson hits the road this weekend to take on Vassar College before closing out the regular season against Skidmore on the final day of April.

Clarkson scored on a man-up opportunity just five minutes into the contest, but the Saints responded with a goal just a minute later to tie the game. It was the beginning of an eight-goal run for St. Lawrence, as the Saints scored the last seven goals of the first quarter and then tallied early in the second before Clarkson ended the streak with a score from Christian Canino near the midway mark of the second quarter. The Saints tallied three more in the final six minutes of the period for a nine-goal advantage at the half.

The Knights scored twice in the first four minutes of the third quarter, sparking hopes of a comeback, but the quarter was quiet overall and the team wasn't able to make up any ground in a 2-2 period. A pair of goals just 10 seconds apart in the fourth again had the Green and Gold hoping for a shift in momentum, but the team's offense was shut down for the remainder of the contest.

The two teams were tied in shots 40-40, but St. Lawrence's attempts found the target more often with a 27-19 lead in shots on goal. The Saints also had narrow advantages in groundballs (30-29) and face-offs (14-12). William Helm made 13 saves for St. Lawrence, while Jacob Mattice and Matt Yonko combined for 10 saves.

Bryan Penney scored two goals and also added two groundballs, but the rest of Clarkson's offense was spread out among seven players with one point each. Mason Volley caused four turnovers and added three groundballs. Matt Szwagulinski caused two turnovers and added six groundballs and Thomas Fiebich assisted on one goal, snagged four groundballs, and caused two turnovers.

St. Lawrence was led by Chris Jordan, who tallied 10 points on four goals and six assists. Mark Mahoney and Ben Murtagh each scored four points with three goals apiece and Jack Hennessey added three goals. Guthrie Little scooped up six groundballs and Hayes Huwiler added four groundballs.
