Hagberg Produces Four Goals in Return as Clarkson Beats Rochester, 17-11

Potsdam, NY – Trailing by one at the half, the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team went on an 11-4 run over the final 30 minutes to claim a key Liberty League victory over University of Rochester, downing the Yellowjackets 17-11 on Saturday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights improved to 9-3 overall and 4-3 in conference games, while Rochester fell to 5-6 and 2-5. Clarkson next faces its North Country neighbor St. Lawrence University on Wednesday afternoon at Hantz Field.

Clarkson held an early 3-1 lead through the first 12 minutes of the game, but Rochester scored three times over the final three minutes to take the lead and then added a man-up goal at the start of the second to push their advantage to 5-3. Clarkson came back and tied the game twice, but another late goal from Rochester allowed the 'Jackets to have a 7-6 lead at the half.

The Golden Knights controlled the third quarter with a 13-4 shot advantage and outscored Rochester 6-1 in the period. Madelynn Barnum and Mia Petrone scored back-to-back free-position goals in the first few minutes of the third and the Knights kept on scoring, including two from Hailey Millington in the final two minutes. Only a last-second goal by Rochester kept the Knights from shutting out the visitors in the period.

The Yellowjackets picked up one goal early in the fourth quarter, but the Knights squashed any hopes of a comeback as Chrissy Benedict and Hailey Millington scored just 25 seconds apart to put the score at 14-9. The Knights then scored three of the next four goals to insure the victory.

In her first game in more than three weeks, Grace Hagberg returned with a big output, scoring five points with four goals and an assist as well as nine draw controls. Madelynn Barnum also tallied five points thanks to three goals and two assists while also adding a pair of draws and two caused turnovers. Millington scored four goals and Sydney Roderick added a goal and two assists for three points. Anna Patterson contributed two caused turnovers and five groundballs on the defensive end and Sydney Christiansen (nine saves) and Laura Wing (one save) combined for 10 stops in the Clarkson crease.

For Rochester, Grace Crochiere had three goals, three draws, and three groundballs, and Grace Giannettino scored three goals as well. Brooke Fiannaca added a pair of goals and Emma Little won nine draws and caused two turnovers. Ava Saffren stopped 12 shots for the Yellowjackets.
