Knights Unable to Upend 15th-Ranked St. Lawrence in 18-16 Conference Defeat

Potsdam, NY – A streak of five straight goals midway through the third quarter proved to be the difference on Wednesday afternoon, as the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team found itself trailing early in the second half and could never quite complete the comeback against 15th-ranked St. Lawrence, falling 18-16 in a high-scoring Liberty League game at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights fell to 9-4 overall and 4-4 in conference games while St. Lawrence improved to 13-1 and 7-1. Clarkson will celebrate its Class of 2022 on Saturday when the team hosts Bard College at 11:00 am.

Clarkson enjoyed the early lead against the Saints on Wednesday, jumping out to a two-goal lead on two occasions in the first 10 minutes, but the Saints scored the final three goals of the quarter to enjoy a 5-4 lead through the first. The second quarter's scoring was comparatively muted as each team only scored twice, but the Saints again found themselves ahead thanks to a goal with only two seconds left in the half.

The big swing came in the third quarter as St. Lawrence broke a 7-7 tie at 11:47 and rattled off five straight goals in the next six minutes for a 12-7 advantage. Clarkson recovered from the blitz and pulled to within three on a man-up goal from Mia Petrone late in the period and then got within two when Madelynn Barnum scored in the opening minutes of the fourth. That was as close as the Knights would get, however, as St. Lawrence always had an answer to keep Clarkson at a safe distance. The Knights got within two goals three more times, but could never cause the Saints to panic with the slimmest of margins.

St. Lawrence led in shots (39-33), shots on goal (32-29), and groundballs (27-17) while Clarkson won 18 draws to the Saints' 16. Sydney Christiansen made 14 saves in the Clarkson crease and Raelynn Bovenzi stopped 13 shots for St. Lawrence.

Sydney Roderick led Clarkson in scoring with six points on two goals and four assists, with all of those points coming in the second half. Mia Petrone added five points on four goals and an assist and Madelynn Barnum contributed four goals, four draw controls, four caused turnovers, and two groundballs. Hailey Millington also added four points with three goals and an assist and Julia Lavarnway scored three times. Grace Hagberg contributed eight draws and two groundballs and Rylee Ganter also collected four draws.

For St. Lawrence, Charlotte Powell and Isabel Silvia each scored four goals and added four groundballs, and Rachel Burke scored three times. Callie O'Neil also had four points on two goals and two assists while also adding seven draws. Dana Fernandez won five draws and Maggie Green snagged five groundballs.

Sydney Roderick's six points pushed her to within three of 200 for her career. She would become just the fourth player in program history to reach that figure. Madelynn Barnum also pushed her season total in goals to 45, becoming only the ninth player in program history to score that many in a single campaign. It took her only 13 games, tying her for the fewest contests for 45 along with Alyssa Cristaldi (2013) and Kimberly Loucks (2009).
