Locklear Fans 13 in Opener, Knights Fall in Doubleheader to Union

Amsterdam, NY – Senior righty Kyle Locklear struck out 13 in just five innings in the opener, but the Clarkson University Baseball team came up short in its twin bill against Union College, dropping the first game 9-8 and then falling in game two 5-2 Saturday afternoon at Shuttleworth Park.

The Golden Knights moved to 3-8 on the season and 0-2 in Liberty League play while Union saw its record edge above .500 at 7-5 and 2-0. The two teams will close out their three-game set on Sunday with a nine-inning contest.

Union opened the scoring in game one in the bottom half of the first as Kobe Mentzer doubled in a run, but Clarkson scored two in the third and one in the fifth to take a 3-1 lead. In the third, Mike Nee singled in a run and Sean Eddington followed with a single through the right side to plate another. The fifth saw Tommy Bianchi drive in a run with a sacrifice fly, but Union tied the contest in the bottom half of the frame when Sam Strazza plated a pair with a single to right. The two teams again traded runs in the sixth as Mike Nee sent Caleb Doyle home with a sac fly, only to see Thomas Parisi triple home a run in the latter half of the inning.

Union took the lead in the seventh with five runs as Clarkson struggled with miscues. The first run came around on a throwing error, another scored on a bases loaded balk, and a third came around on another error before Mentzer singled home two more. Clarkson nearly made a comeback in the ninth, however, as Bianchi singled in a run, Joe Pagano forced a run in on a fielder's choice, and Danny Cantor doubled in a pair. Pinch-hitter John Young nearly tied the contest but his infield liner was snared to end the game.

Kyle Locklear was solid on the bump, striking out 13 and walking just one while allowing two earned runs and seven hits in five innings.

In game two, Union once again took an early lead in the first as Sam Strazza doubled in Mentzer, but Clarkson plated a pair in the top of the second as Michael Tito drove in two with a single to right. The Golden Knights' lead was short-lived, however, as a two-run single from Jake Davis made the score 3-2. The Dutchmen added insurance runs in the third and sixth, with Jono Santos homering in the third and a Thomas Parisi single plating another run in what proved to be Union's last at bat.

Griffin Tubbs went the distance for the Knights, striking out one and walking one in six frames, while Chris Suter went seven innings for the win for Union, giving up six hits and two walks with three strikeouts.
