Knights Fall in Both Games of Opening Day in Florida

Leesburg, FL – Some unfortunately timed miscues put the Clarkson University Softball team in some difficult spots, as the Golden Knights dropped a pair on its opening day to Wisconsin-Lacrosse (7-0) and Ramapo (10-2) on Tuesday at the Sleepy Hollow Sports Complex.

The Golden Knights started off the season at 0-2, while Wisconsin-Lacrosse improved to 7-3 and Ramapo saw its record to go 5-0. Clarkson is scheduled to take on SUNY Geneseo and Babson on Wednesday.

In the opener, the Knights could muster just three hits in the contest off pitcher Elise Weinzierl, and Wisconsin-Lacrosse got all that it would need in the third inning. The Eagles their first run of the game on a single from Kyra Lard and picked up one more on a throwing error to make it 2-0. In the fourth, Hailey Pitzl doubled in a run, but three unearned runs came across in the frame, one on a throwing error and two more on a two-out home run from Lard. Emily Knight then tacked on another run with a homer in the fifth for the final score of 7-0.

In game two, Clarkson picked up a pair of runs in its first at bat as Kayla Robert singled in a run and Zoey Kobach drove in another with a single to left to put the Knights up 2-0 early. That was all that the Clarkson would get, however, as Mahogany Wheeler settled in for Ramapo. The roadrunners took advantage of a steady diet of singles in the third, getting their first run on a base hit and then tying the game on a bases-loaded walk. Two more came in on a throwing error and run-scoring hits from Anna Messina and Jaclyn Monaco put the score at 6-2 before a wild pitch plated a seventh run in the frame.

In the fourth inning, Katie Rygiel singled in a run to make the score 8-2 and Carli Egan plated a pair with a single up the middle in the bottom of the fifth to put the margin at eight and end the contest early.
