Late Run by Hobart Sends Knights to Defeat at Home, 89-70

Potsdam, NY – Senior Chris Hulbert struck for 20 points for the third straight game, but the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team couldn't keep up with Hobart College on Wednesday afternoon, as the Golden Knights fell to the Statesmen 89-70 in Liberty League action at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights dropped to 5-16 overall and 2-12 in conference games while Hobart moved to 9-11 and 6-7 in the Liberty League. Clarkson will hit the road to take on Ithaca College and Rensselaer this weekend.

Each team got off to a slow start with Blake Gearhart breaking the ice with a 3-pointer at the 18:15 mark, but Hobart then went on a 16-5 run, finished off by a Chandler Owenby layup-and-one at 14:45. Clarkson cut the margin to four near the midway point of the half, only to see Hobart go on another run, a 10-2 spurt that was capped off by a Jackson Meshanic layup-and-one at 5:28. Clarkson got back into striking distance late in the half as Blake Gearhart and Chris Hulbert nailed 3-pointers, and then Teddy Fravel hit a layup in the waning moments to trim the deficit to eight.

Hobart shot 15-for-29 from the floor (51.7%) in the first half while the Knights were shot 10-for-26, but Clarkson was a more impressive 6-for-8 from beyond the 3-point arc in the opening 20 minutes.

The game remained close in the first 10 minutes of the second half, as Clarkson fell behind by double figures on a few occasions but also pulled to within eight a few times. The deficit was only 10 with 9:20 to go, but then David Corrales Marco got hot for the Statesmen, scoring all 19 of his points in a stretch of just seven-plus minutes, pushing Hobart's advantage to 20-plus points.

Overall, Hobart was 34-for-64 from the floor, a 53.1% rate, scoring 51 points in the second half. Clarkson was 10-for-15 (66.7%) from beyond the arc, but struggled on closer shots, going 17-for-43 (39.5%).

Chris Hulbert scored 20 points on 7-for-14 shooting and was 4-for-5 from beyond the arc, his third straight 20-point game and the fourth time he's hit that threshold in the last five games. Blake Gearhart added 18 points, going 6-for-10 from the field, and six rebounds. Hobart had five players in double figures, led by David Corrales Marco, who scored 19 on 7-for-8 shooting in just 17 minutes off the bench.
