Knights' Second-Half Surge Comes Up Short at Hobart

Geneva, NY – For the second straight night Chris Hulbert surpassed 20 points, but a slow start hurt the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team as the Golden Knights' second-half run came up short in an 80-70 loss at Hobart College on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights saw their season mark fall to 5-15 while dropping to 2-11 in the Liberty League and Hobart saw its record move to 7-11 and 4-7. The two teams will match up again on Wednesday afternoon in Potsdam as Hobart looks to makeup games lost from January with back-to-back midweek games against St. Lawrence and Clarkson.

The Knights opened the scoring with a dunk from Teddy Fravel, but that was the last time that Clarkson would be in the lead as Hobart went on a 10-0 run in a stretch of three minutes. The Statesmen built their advantage to double digits after a 3-pointer from Jack Lesure at 13:22 and then edged out to 18 following a 3-pointer from Matt Brand at the 4:15 mark which made it 34-16. Clarkson had its troubles in the first half, missing all seven of its 3-point attempts and going 10-for-32 from the floor with a 10-rebound deficit (26-16 in favor of Hobart) in the opening 20 minutes.

Hobart twice pushed its lead to as many as 19 points in the early going of the second half, but Clarkson slowly chipped away at the deficit, getting to within seven near the midway point of the period on a free throw from Chris Hulbert (56-49). The Statesmen regained their double-digit advantage a few moments later, but the Knights wouldn't go away thanks to back-to-back 3-pointers from Chris Hulbert and Joe Lucas with less than five minutes to play. After a modest first half, Hulbert kept Clarkson within striking distance late thanks to a couple of baskets in close. A layup-and-one from Blake Gearhart with 47 seconds remaining made things interesting for the Knights, cutting the margin to just six, but Hobart was able to hit the free throws it needed in the final minute to claim the win.

Hulbert finished with 21, shooting 8-for-22 from the floor, and eight rebounds while Gearhart contributed 15 points on 7-for-13 shooting. Ryan Miles-Ferguson came off the bench to add 15 points as well, going 6-for-11 from the field. For Hobart, Jackson Meshanic scored 27 on 10-for-15 shooting while also adding 12 rebounds. Aidan Rodgers chipped in 13 points and Chandler Owenby contributed 10 points by going 4-for-5 from the floor.
