Dalgety's Big Game Sends Knights to 54-49 Win Over SLU

Potsdam, NY - With points at a premium in the second half, sophomore Jack Dalgety made a huge shot in the lane in the final minute to help lift the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team to a 54-49 win over St. Lawrence in Liberty League action Wednesday evening at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights edged back over .500 to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in the Liberty League, while the Saints match Clarkson's overall mark at 4-3 but fell to 1-2 in conference games. Clarkson will close out the first semester with a game at NVU-Lyndon on Sunday and the team heads to Florida at the tail end of the month before returning to Liberty League play in January.

Clarkson led for the majority of the game, but it was nevertheless a close affair throughout. The Knights jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the first three minutes, but St. Lawrence rallied to take its only lead of the contest at 10:41 when Will Engelhardt sank a jumper. Dalgety hit a 3-pointer a minute later to put the Knights back on top, starting a 10-0 run in a stretch of three minutes. The Saints halted the streak and ended the half down by four.

At the start of the second, Clarkson again pushed its margin to as much as six, but the game remained tight. The Saints trailed by one on numerous occasions, and even tied the game at 44-44 with 9:16 to go. Clarkson converted a minute later, but that was the last point for either team for more than five minutes until Finn Cork worked his way inside for a layup at 3:10 (48-44).

Even a six-point lead seemed like a daunting deficit for the Saints to overcome, but a Liam McDonald 3-pointer and a basket inside by Trent Adamson trimmed the margin to just one (50-49). With the shot clock dropping to single digits, Dalgety put his head down and used his body to shoulder his way closer to the basket and used a small baby hook to put the Knights up by three with 26 seconds remaining. After a miss and a turnover, Clarkson threw the ball long with the press on and Dalgety found Ryan Miles-Ferguson for a dunk at the other end, finishing off the victory.

Dalgety had his best game as a collegian, producing a double-double in the first 20 minutes of the game (14 points, 10 rebounds) and finishing with 21 points and 15 boards, including 13 on the defensive glass. Teddy Gravel also contributed 13 points and seven rebounds and Ryan Miles-Ferguson chipped in nine points. For St. Lawrence, Trent Adamson was just short of a double-double on 16 pints and eight rebounds, but no other St. Lawrence player had more than six points. Neither team was particularly sharp from the outside, as the Saints were just 3-for-14 from the 3-point line and Clarkson went 4-for-24, with Dalgety accounting for all four makes.
