Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Miles-Ferguson Tosses in 20 as Knights Fall to Fifth-Ranked Oswego State

Potsdam, NY – A hot start from the perimeter by the visitors put the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team on its heels in the early going, and despite a strong recovery in the first half, the Golden Knights could not keep pace with the fifth-ranked Oswego State Lakers, as the Green and Gold fell 94-69 Tuesday night at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights saw their record fall to 0-2 on the year, while Oswego State remained unbeaten at 3-0. Clarkson will take on a couple of North Country rivals this weekend, traveling to play SUNY Canton on Friday and then hosting SUNY Potsdam on Saturday afternoon.

Oswego got off to a strong start on the flawless shooting of Devin Green in the first few minutes, as Green nailed four 3-pointers in barely three minutes to put the Lakers up 14-2 at 16:39. The Lakers would extend their advantage the next possession on a 3-pointer from Kaleb Cook, but Clarkson would slowly chip away at the deficit for the remainder of the half. Sparked by reserve guard Frankie Rainville, the Knights got within six by the midway point of the half, with Rainville burying a pair of 3-pointers and Blake Gearhart doing the same, putting the score at 24-18. Though Oswego would once again push the gap to double figures, Clarkson did its best to stay close for the rest of the half. When Matteo Sinon put back his own miss with just under a minute to go, the Knights trailed by only five at the break.

Oswego shot over 50% from the floor (19-for-36) in the first half with seven 3-pointers, while Clarkson was also one make above the 50-50 mark, shooting 16-for-31 with six 3-pointers.

The five-point margin at the break would be as close as Clarkson would get, as the Lakers used a 10-2 run in the early going of the second to make what was an eight-point lead a 16-point gap. Clarkson would narrow the difference briefly, but 16 points was generally as close as the Knights could get in the final 10 minutes of the contest. The Lakers could not keep up their shooting pace from the perimeter in the second half, but the team did shoot 60% from inside the arc in the second half, while the Knights shot only 30.3% (10-for-33) in the final 20 minutes.

Ryan Miles-Ferguson finished with a team-best 20 points to lead the Knights, shooting 7-for-13 from the floor and 5-for-5 from the free throw line, to go along with six rebounds. Frankie Rainville scored 16 points in just 19 minutes, shooting 6-for-8 from the field with four 3-pointers. Blake Gearhart also chipped in eight points and six assists.

For Oswego State, four players finished in double figures, led by Devin Green's 23 points on 9-for-14 shooting, and the senior also found his teammates for six assists. Jamal Achille shot 9-for-13 from the field and scored 18 points, and Jeremiah Sparks scored 16 points, going 7-for-11 on his shots.
