Knights Hold Off Raptors With Key 2-1 Conference Victory

Potsdam, NY – With two goals 10 minutes apart early in the second half, the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team weathered a push from Bard College down the stretch to claim a 2-1 victory in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights improved to 8-2-3 overall and 2-2-3 in the Liberty League, while Bard fell to 4-7-1 and 0-6-0. Clarkson hits the road next weekend to take on Union College.

Shots were at a premium in the first half, as Clarkson's best chance came on a header from Remi Ufheil in the first 10 minutes of the game. The second half things opened up as the Golden Knights were able to get on the scoreboard in the 51st minute. James Nicholas started the play with a corner kick and found Logan Drake on the opposite side of the box. Drake took a shot that was redirected by Colin Wright and hit the crossbar, but Wright was able to reclaim the ball and tapped it in at 50:28 to put Clarkson up 1-0.

A second yellow card on a Bard player gave Clarkson a player-advantage and the Knights took advantage roughly 10 minutes later. Nicholas did a lot of the work weaving through the Bard defense and found Josh Conklin in front for a shot in close past Bard goalkeeper Gavin Hersey.

Midway in the 70th minute, Clarkson was called for its first yellow card and on the ensuing free kick in the box, the ball rattled off one Clarkson header and then between another Clarkson player and a Bard offensive player down to the foot of Calvin Moe, and he was able to finish off the play to cut the margin to one, at 69:28.

The score reinvigorated the Raptors, especially when a Clarkson player was sent off with his second yellow, allow the Raptors a few more chances later as the teams were back to even. Their best opportunity came on the final play of the game as a corner kick resulted in a header that went over the crossbar by about five feet, ending the contest.

Clarkson won the battle of shots 14-4 and 7-2 in shots on goal, though the game was more even in corner kicks with Clarkson holding a modest 5-4 advantage. Carter Kladstrup stopped one shot for the Knights and Hersey made five saves for the Raptors.
