Zoeller Whiffs 10 in CU Softball Split at Rochester

Rochester, NY – Junior Olivia Zoeller picked up the win in game one with 10 strikeouts and the game-winning RBI in the top of the seventh as the Clarkson University Softball team split its Liberty League doubleheader against University of Rochester, winning the first 3-2 and dropping the second 8-0.

The Golden Knights moved to 18-12 on the season and 10-8 in conference games while Rochester saw its record to go 27-8 and 20-3 in the Liberty League. The two teams will close out the regular season on Sunday with a doubleheader in Potsdam at Scott Field.

Each team put a runner on in the first, but the biggest threat in the early innings came in the top of the fourth for the Knights. Sarah Vaccaro led off with a double to left-center and Kayla Robert followed with a walk. After the pair moved up a base each on a ground out, Hannah Leahy was able to induce another ground out and escaped the threat by retiring the final hitter of the inning on a line out to right. Rochester responded with a small threat of its own in the bottom of the inning as Sammi Re led off with a walk and stole second before any outs were recorded. Olivia Zoeller struck out the next hitter and picked up a second out a line out, but with a 2-2 count, Allison Beckwith hit an inside fastball out to left to give Rochester a 2-0 edge.

Clarkson quickly got a run back in the top of the fifth as Rylee LeBourveau swung at the first pitch she saw in her second at bat of the game, clearing the left field fence for a solo homer, making it 2-1. In the sixth, Vaccaro ripped another double to lead off the frame and then moved to third on a ground out. Emily McBath then singled to center to plate Vaccaro, tying the game at 2-2.

In the bottom half of the sixth, Zoeller allowed an infield single and then a single off the left field wall to put runners on first and second, but she wiggled out of the jam with a fly out and a strikeout. Clarkson took advantage of its momentum in the top of the seventh. LeBourveau doubled to the wall in right-center and Zoeller singled up the middle to send LeBourveau home, as she eluded the tag at the plate to put the Knights up 3-2.

In the bottom of the seventh, Rochester loaded the bases with a pair of singles and a walk around a pair of walks. With the tying-run at third and the potential winning run on second, Hannah Keiper just missed out on a walk-off grand slam twice, as the 1-1 pitch was driven foul to left and the next swing sent LeBourveau back to the center field fence, where the senior hauled it in near the piping of the fence line to end the game.

Zoeller struck out 10 in her five-hitter, the most strikeouts by any pitcher against Rochester in 34 games in 2021, with the previous high being just seven. Vaccaro finished 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and LeBourveau was 2-for-3 with a home run and a double as well as two runs scored. Hannah Leahy took the loss for Rochester, allowing six hits and two walks with two strikeouts in seven innings.

In game two, Rochester scored runs on errors in both the first and third innings and a two-run single by Jen Carson in the fourth put Rochester up 4-0. In the fifth, the Yellowjackets put the game away with a four-run fifth, ending the contest early via run rule. Madi Turner doubled in a run and Hunter Gilbreath doubled in another to make it 6-0 and Sammi Re followed with a two-run single to put the game away.

Emily McBath took the loss for the Knights in the second game, going four innings before Riley Page relieved her for the bottom of the fifth.
