Knights Drop Pair to 22nd-Ranked Rochester

Potsdam, NY – Needing some key wins against the first-place team in the Liberty League, the Clarkson University Softball team came up short of the postseason on Sunday, falling in pair of games against 22nd-ranked University of Rochester 3-2 and 5-3 at Scott Field.

The Golden Knights saw their season conclude at 18-14 overall and 10-10 in the Liberty League. Rochester kept its spot at the top of the league standings, moving to 29-8 and 22-3 in conference contests.

In the opener, Clarkson got on the board first as Kayla Robert delivered a two-out single to score Olivia Zoeller, but the Golden Knights' bats were relatively quiet for the next few innings as Rochester got back into the game. In the top of the fourth, Sammi Re reached on an error, stole second, moved to third on a passed ball and then came home on a single by Hannah Keiper to tie the game 1-1. An inning later, Alexis Pope singled and stole second before eventually coming home on an error to give the Yellowjackets a 2-1 advantage. And in the top of the seventh, Jen Carson led off with a single up the middle and scored on a double to left by Toni Anne Hawn, giving Rochester a 3-1 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, Clarkson loaded the bases on singles from Riley Page, Rylee LeBourveau and Olivia Zoeller, and the Knights got one run back on a sac fly by Sam Short, but the next two hitters couldn't push the tying run across and the Green and Gold came up a run short.

Zoeller was solid once again for the Knights, striking out 11 against six hits and one earned run in seven innings, but the junior took the loss to fall to 14-4 on the year. She also went 2-for-4 at the plate while Robert also had a pair of hits for Clarkson. Rochester's Hannah Leahy was the winning pitcher in game one, striking out five in six innings, and Emily Sharlach came on in the seventh to earn the save.

Game two saw Rochester jump out in the front with a run in the first and two more in the third. Hahn drew a bases loaded walk to force in a run in the first, while a single from Alizah Ayon and a sac fly by Alexis Pope each drove in runs in the third. Clarkson got one back in the fourth on Kayla Robert's solo home run to center, but two passed balls sent runners in for the Yellowjackets in the fifth to make the score 5-1. Clarkson chipped away with a run in the sixth on Sarah Vaccaro's solo home run. In their final at bat, the Knights loaded the bases on hits by Emily McBath, Alyssa Schaechinger and Amanda Riley, and an infield hit by LeBourveau scored one. However, a lineout turned into a double play to end the threat and the game.

Only Vaccaro (2-for-3) and Ayon (2-for-3) had multi-hit games for either team in the second contest. Emily Sharlach got the win, her 11th of the year, for Rochester, while Emily McBath took the loss for Clarkson, throwing the first 2.1 innings. Riley Page also gave up two unearned runs in her two innings of work, and Olivia Zoeller threw 2.2 innings of hitless relief to end the game, striking out five more hitters along the way.
