CU Baseball Splits With 22nd Ranked Oswego

Oswego, NY – Twice facing eight run deficits in the early innings, the Clarkson University Baseball team came from behind to win game one against 22nd-ranked Oswego State and nearly turned the trick again in the second game, as the two teams split, Clarkson claiming victory in the opener 12-9 and dropping the nightcap 11-8 on Tuesday afternoon.

The Golden Knights moved to 13-14-1 overall while Oswego saw its record go to 18-2. Clarkson will close out the Liberty League regular season on Saturday when it hosts RIT.

Oswego rolled out to an early lead, scoring once in the bottom of the first when Paul Tammaro singled and advanced to third on an error before scoring on a wild pitch. The Lakers tacked on six in the next inning on six hits, and then in the third added one more run when Tammaro singled home Connor Stanton to make it 8-0 through three frames.

However, if Clarkson has proven anything this year is that no lead by the opposition is insurmountable. The Knights scored twice in the fifth as Colby Brouillette doubled and then came home when Tommy Bianchi reached on an error, and Bianchi found his way home thanks to a sacrifice fly by Robert Whalen. But it was the top of the sixth where the Knights' offense really got going, as the team circled the bases eight times. Kent Wilson led off with a single and Michael Mieczkowski followed with another to put runners on first and second. Michael Tito then loaded the bases with a bunt single, allowing the merry-go-round to begin. Brouillette singled to score one, Bianchi singled to right to plate another, and Joe Stockman doubled down the right-field line to make it 8-6. Whalen grounded out to score Bianchi and after another out, Caleb Doyle walked to put runners on the corners. Wilson then put the Knights up with a triple to right and Mieczkowski sent him home with a single to left-center to give the Knights a 10-8 lead.

Oswego got one back in the bottom of the sixth, but Clarkson scored single runs in the seventh and eighth innings as Bianchi hit a solo home run in the former and Brouillette singled in Mieczkowski in the latter for a 12-9 advantage.

Bianchi finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two more driven in, Mieczkowski was 3-for-5 with two runs scored, Stockman went 3-for-5 with a pair driven in, Brouillette drove in two runs and scored two more while going 3-for-5, and Wilson ended up 3-for-6, scoring twice and driving in two. Jake Phillips kept things quiet in the final four innings for Oswego, as he came on early in the sixth and allowed just three hits and struck out four in long relief.

Much like they did in the first game, the Lakers' offense was loud in the early going, putting up four runs in the bottom of the first and five more in the bottom of the second, with the big blows coming off the bats of Kyle Lauria and Myles Felton, as each delivered three-run homers. However, Clarkson had one in the top of the second when Tito came around on a single by Robert Whalen. The big innings for the Knights came in the fourth and fifth. Tito delivered a two-run single to plate Zachary Carpin and Colby Brouillette to make it 9-3 and Jonathan Irons and Caleb Doyle each drove in a run to close the gap through four frames. In the fifth, pinch-hitter Mike Nee singled in Bianchi, Irons singled home Tito, and Doyle's sacrifice fly sent pinch-runner Jake Millich in to make the score 9-8.

The Knights were unable to complete the comeback, though, as Oswego scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to create enough cushion to keep Clarkson at a safe distance in the seven-inning contest.

Game two saw Kent Wilson collect three hits for the second time, going 3-for-5. Tito went 1-for-2 and drew a pair of walks, driving in three and scoring twice. Irons also drove in two and was 2-for-4 at the dish.
