Game Recap: Men's Baseball |

Phillips Outstanding in Relief to Give Knights Split and Playoff Berth

Potsdam, NY – With a game two win in its doubleheader against RIT, the Clarkson University Baseball team squeaked into the Liberty League playoffs with its split versus the Tigers, dropping game one 4-1 before rallying in game two for a 6-3 win on Sunday at Jack Phillips Stadium.

The Golden Knights moved to 14-15-1 on the year and saw their record go to 8-7-1 in conference games, while the Tigers closed out their season at 8-19 and 4-12. Clarkson earned the fourth seed in the Liberty League playoffs and will face top-seeded University of Rochester on Wednesday.

Starters Glenn Stever and Collin Reformat matched zeroes in the first two innings with no hitters reaching base in the early going, but RIT broke through against Stever in the third. Randy Dodig reached on a two-out error and that was enough to get things going as Daniel Capra and Patrick Blackall followed with back-to-back singles to put the Tigers up 1-0. Clarkson responded in the bottom half of the inning when Jonathan Irons led off the frame with a double down the left field line. Caleb Doyle moved him to third when he singled hard back to the pitcher, and a Michael Mieczkowski sac fly did the job to send Irons home to tie the game 1-1.

RIT picked up two in the top of the fourth, including a leadoff home run by Chris Reilly. Later in the frame, three of four hitters singled as Dodig's hit scored Nic Stagnitta to make it 3-1. Clarkson got things going in the bottom half of the inning as Colby Brouillette and Mike Nee recorded back-to-back doubles, but Nee's double didn't score Brouillette as he had to hold at second to make sure the ball wasn't caught. The pair would be stranded in scoring position, however, and the Knights never had as good of a threat again. RIT picked up an insurance ruin the seventh on an RBI single from Ian Libby.

Brouillette, Nee, and Irons each doubled, but no Clarkson player had more than one hit in the contest. Both Reilly (2-for-4) and Dodig (2-for-3, 2 runs) had multi-hit games for the Tigers.

RIT was in a position for a sweep as the Tigers scored three runs in the first three innings of game two. In the second, Brooks Vertoske led off the inning with a solo home run to left and Daniel Capra later drove in a run with a single to center to put RIT up 2-0. An inning later, Ian Libby hit one out to right-center to make it 3-0, but Clarkson rallied in the bottom of the fourth to take its first lead of the day. Tommy Bianchi reached on an error and Colby Brouillette followed with a walk. The pair moved up a base on a passed ball and Mike Nee singled to center to score Bianchi, putting runners on the corners. Mieczkowski then laced one to left to score another run, and three batters later, Michael Tito drove a single to center to score two and put the Knights up 4-3.

Clarkson picked up insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings, as a fielder's choice by Brouillette scored Doyle and then a wild pitch allowed Zachary Carpin to come home.

Jake Phillips was excellent in relief for the Knights, coming on early in the fourth. He tossed the final six innings for Clarkson, allowing just two hits and a single walk while striking out eight to pick up his second win of the week. Daniel Capra took the loss for RIT, giving up seven hits and four runs (only one earned) in four innings of work. At the plate, Doyle had three hits in four at bats and both Nee and Mieczkowski were 2-for-4.
