Knights Split with Union For Second Straight Day

Potsdam, NY – Kayla Robert went 3-for-3 and drove in a pair and Olivia Zoeller tossed her second two-hitter of the weekend as the Clarkson University Softball team salvaged a split against Union College on Sunday, falling 6-4 in the opener and taking game two 3-1 in Liberty League action at Scott Field.

The Golden Knights moved to 17-11 overall and 9-7 in the Liberty League while Union saw its record go to 5-16 overall and 5-14 in conference.

In the first game, Karson Saunders made the Dutchwomen move as she recorded five hits in as many at bats, scoring twice and driving in another. In the top of the first, Saunders reached on a two-out double and then stole third, allowing her to trot home on a single by Julia Boule. In the third, Saunders singled up the middle, stole second, and then scored on an RBI single by Olivia Valery to put Union up 2-0. Union scored two more in the fourth, with Saunders delivering an infield single to plate the Dutchwomen's third run, and another came home on a wild pitch.

Clarkson got its offense going in the bottom half of the fourth as Kayla Robert ripped a single past a diving second baseman to plate both Olivia Zoeller and Bridget Twaits, cutting the lead in half. In the bottom of the seventh, the Knights got things rolling as Sarah Vaccaro led off by reaching on a wild pitch after a strikeout and then advanced to second on a ground out. Maddie Brink followed with a single to put runners on the corners, and Sydney Russo delivered a single to left to cut the margin to one. Emily McBath singled to load the bases and Riley Page then singled to center to tie the game. Clarkson had two outs to work with to put the winning run across, but a pop up marked the second out while a sinking liner to center was caught to preserve the tie for the Dutchwomen.

Union took advantage by scoring twice in the top of the eighth, getting a run on a wild pitch and another thanks to a sacrifice fly. Vaccaro walked in the eighth to bring the tying run to the plate twice in the bottom half of the inning, but she never advanced past first.

Game two proved to be much lower scoring, but Clarkson pushed on across in its first at bat. Zoeller singled to center with one out and Vaccaro singled through the left side to put runners on first and second. Robert then singled between the first and second basemen to score Zoeller and give the Knights a 1-0 lead. It would be three more innings before the Knights would score again, but Rylee LeBourveau ripped a two-out double off the base of the left field wall to put a runner in scoring position, and she then came around when Bridget Twaits singled to right.

Union picked up a run in the top of the fifth as Zoeller momentarily lost the zone. She hit one batter and then allowed a single, but a walk loaded the bases. Another hit batter forced a run in, but Zoeller got out of the jam by striking out the next two hitters.

Clarkson got the run back in the bottom half of the inning. Vaccaro doubled to left and Robert hit the bottom of the right field wall with a double of her own to make the score 3-1. That was all Zoeller would need and she struck out the side in the sixth and then induced weak contact in the seventh to close out the game.

Zoeller finished with 12 strikeouts in seven innings and allowed just two hits and a walk as well as the two hit batters. Offensively, Robert was 3-for-3 with two driven in, while Twaits, Zoeller, and Vaccaro each had a pair of hits.
