Knights Split Saturday Doubleheader at RIT

Rochester, NY – Another late rally by the Clarkson University Baseball team gave the Golden Knights a win over RIT in the opener, 10-5, but the Tigers came back to split Saturday's Liberty League doubleheader with a 16-6 win in the nightcap.

The Golden Knights moved to 12-13-1 overall and 7-6-1 in the Liberty League while the Tigers edged upward to 7-18 and 3-11. The two teams are scheduled for a Sunday doubleheader at Jack Phillips Stadium to close out the four-game set.

In the opener, Clarkson got on the scoreboard first thanks to an RBI-single from Joe Stockman in the second, but the Knights found themselves trailing after RIT put up a four-spot in the bottom of the third. Two walks and a wild pitch put runners in scoring position and then the Tigers began to string some hits together as Patrick Blackall, Ian Libby, Chris Reilly, and Nate Kistler each drove in runs in the inning. Meanwhile, the Clarkson bats were relatively quiet over the next four frames.

Things would change in the top of the sixth as the Knights pushed five across. Zachary Carpin led off the inning with a home run to left, but the Knights kept things up as Mike Mieczkowski doubled and advanced on a wild pitch. Mike Nee then singled in Mieczkowski, and Tommy Bianchi reached on an error to put runners on the corners. Stockman singled to tie the game 4-4. Jonathan Irons walked to load the bases and a wild pitch allowed the go-ahead run to score. What proved to be the game-winning RBI came on a Kent Wilson bases-loaded walk.

In the seventh, Clarkson tacked on four insurance runs, all with two outs. Bianchi and Stockman singled and Irons walked to load the bases. Caleb Doyle then singled to third to score the first of the frame, and Kent Wilson immediately followed with a bases-clearing double to make it 10-4. RIT got one back in the bottom of the seventh on a Blackall double, but the Knights held on for another come-from-behind win.

Stockman went 3-for-4, scored two runs and drove in two runs to lead the Knights. Wilson had just one hit, but drove in four runs. Kyle Locklear went 6.1 innings and struck out nine to gain his fourth win of the season. For RIT, Blackall was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI, Libby was 2-for-4, and Daniel Capra was hitless in one at bat but walked three times and scored twice.

Game two saw RIT strike for seven runs in the bottom of the first, with the big blow coming on a three-run homer to left-center by Kyle. Watson. Clarkson chipped away with three in the top of the second as Robert Whalen homered down the left field line and Colby Brouillette drove in a pair with his 10th double of the year. RIT scored once in the bottom of the second, but Clarkson scored twice in the third, one coming in on a single by Joe Stockman, his 100th career hit, and another on a sac fly by Whalen, making the score 8-5. That was as close as the Knights would get, however, as RIT scored twice in the fourth and sent six more around in the fifth. Clarkson got one back in the eighth when Derek Cuyler scored on a wild pitch, but that proved to be the lone run for the Knights over the final six innings.
