Strong Pitching Performances and Plenty of Offense Highlight Clarkson Sweep of SLU

Potsdam, NY – Two eight-run innings highlighted the Clarkson University Baseball team's afternoon against St. Lawrence as the Golden Knights swept their third straight doubleheader, this time in Liberty League action, with 18-2 and 7-1 victories over the Saints on Friday at Jack Phillips Stadium.

The Golden Knights improved to 7-5 overall and 2-0 in conference, running their win streak to six straight games. The Saints fell to 3-5 on the year and 0-2 in league games. The two teams will lock up for another doubleheader on Saturday in Canton.

Clarkson's offense took little time to assert itself, plating eight in the bottom half of the first. Kent Wilson opened the game by reaching on an error and then advancing to second on a wild pitch. Colby Brouillette singled up the middle to score Wilson and a hit by pitch for Jonathan Irons put two runners on. Michael Tito then singled home Brouillette, and a throwing error allowed Irons to score to make it 3-0, but the Knights were far from finished. Joe Stockman singled home Tito, Robert Whalen doubled in a pair, Caleb Doyle doubled in Whalen, and Michael Mieczkowski singled in Doyle to make it 8-0.

Clarkson scored a run in the bottom of the third when Wilson one-hopped the wall with a line drive double to score Doyle, and then in the fourth a sacrifice fly from Stockman made it 10-0. A misjudged fly ball turned into a double for James Cronin to help St. Lawrence get on the board, but Clarkson scored eight more runs in the bottom of the sixth to put the Knights up 18-1. Cronin doubled home William Montgomery in the seventh, but it was much too little to cause concern for the Knights.

Kyle Locklear was strong in his second start of the season, striking out 12 over five innings for his second win of the year. Derrick Lewis pitched the last two innings, striking out three. Mieczkowski was 3-for-5 at the plate, Wilson was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two more driven in, Irons, Doyle, and Tito each went 2-for-3, and Stockman drove in three runs scored and scored twice himself.

In game two, the Knights were comparatively quiet on offense with eight hits, but the team scored in four different innings and kept St. Lawrence quiet again. In the first, Wilson walked and came around on a Brouillette double to left, and in the third, Brouillette again doubled to the left field corner to score Mieczkowski.

Two innings later, Clarkson scored three runs without the benefit of a hit as the bases were loaded on a strikeout/wild pitch and two walks. Joe Stockman then hit a grounder to second, but the ball went to the outfield on an error, allowing two runs to score. Locklear then reached on a fielder's choice to score another run, making it 6-0.

In the top of the sixth, Brian Comerford doubled in the lone run for the Saints, and the Knights responded an inning later as Irons walked and was pushed to third on a double by Stockman, allowing Locklear's sacrifice fly to do the rest.

Griffin Tubbs won his second game of the year, allowing just four hits and a walk over six innings, striking out three along the way. Jake Phillips gained a save with three innings of near spotless relief, giving up just a hit and a walk while striking out five. Mieczkowski was 3-for-5 again, Brouillette had two doubles and two RBI, Irons scored twice, Stockman went 2-for-4, and Locklear drove in a pair.
