Knights Split Saturday Twinbill Versus St. Lawrence

Canton, NY – A solid outing by Glenn Stever put the Clarkson University Baseball team in a position to sweep the four-game series against St. Lawrence, but the Saints' bats woke up in the final game as the Golden Knights had to settle for a split on Saturday, winning the opener 11-5 but dropping the nightcap 17-6 at Tom Fay Field.

The Golden Knights saw their seven-game winning streak come to an end, and fell to 8-6 overall and 3-1 in the Liberty League, while St. Lawrence's win salvaged its weekend as the Saints moved to 4-6 and 1-3. Clarkson is scheduled to take on Oswego State on Wednesday afternoon in a non-league doubleheader.

Stever picked up the win in the first game of the doubleheader, pitching six strong innings with five hits allowed and four strikeouts. Joe Stockman recorded the final three outs to close out the game.

Clarkson's offense put two up in the first and three more in the second. Michael Mieczkowski walked, Colby Brouillette singled, and then the pair pulled off a double steal to move to second and third. Jonathan Irons followed with an infield single to score the first run and Michael Tito grounded out to push Brouillette across. In the third, Mieczkowski drove in a run with a single, Brouillette plated another with a sacrifice fly, and an unearned run came home when Irons reached on an error.

St. Lawrence responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth, but Clarkson got the run back when Irons walked, moved to second on a sac bunt, and then came in on a Joe Stockman single. Clarkson put the game away in the sixth with four more runs as Caleb Doyle scored on a wild pitch, Brouillette singled home a run, Tito drove in a run with a fielder's choice, and Stockman drove in another run with a single.

The Saints scored two in the sixth, Robert Whalen scored on a ground out in the seventh for Clarkson, and St. Lawrence pushed two more across in the bottom of the seventh.

Brouillette finished game one 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored and two more driven in, while Stockman, Whalen, and Irons each had two hits. Tito drove in two runs and Doyle scored twice in the win.

In the second game, St. Lawrence put up multiple runs in the first five innings and tacked on crooked numbers in the seventh and eighth, making it difficult for the Knights to keep up. Clarkson scored one in the first when a fielder's choice sent Kent Wilson home, and the Knights scored again in the third when Wilson was driven in by a Mieczkowski single. Clarkson added four runs in the sixth as well as Gerard Mouton walked with the bases loaded to force home a run, Stockman scored on a wild pitch, an error allowed Joe Pagano to score, and John Young was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force home another run.
