Knights Put Up 26 Runs in Doubleheader Versus Ithaca

Potsdam, NY – Bats were busy for both teams on Saturday afternoon, as the Clarkson University Baseball team picked up a 15-10 win over Ithaca College in game one of the doubleheader and then came back to tie 11-11 in game two, with the second contest called due to darkness at Jack Phillips Stadium.

It was the first tie for the Golden Knights under Jim Kane's guidance, a stretch of 20-plus seasons, and the team moved to 11-12-1 overall and 6-5-1 in the Liberty League. Ithaca saw its record to go 12-7-1 and 7-2-1. Clarkson is scheduled to play Plattsburgh State in a non-league doubleheader on Wednesday.

Clarkson jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first two innings, only to see Ithaca come back to tie the score by the fifth frame. The Knights pushed two across on a Zachary Carpin single in the first, and then six scored in the sixth. Robert Whalen led off with a double and scored when Kyle Locklear doubled. Locklear later came around on a wild pitch to make the score 4-0. Ithaca then committed some costly errors, as two runs came in on a miscue at short, and another scored on a mishandled ball at third. Jake Millich then hit a sacrifice fly to put the Knights up 8-0.

Ithaca scored five in the top of the third, including a two-run double by Buzz Shirley, and then tied the game in the fifth when Garrett Callaghan singled in a run, Gil Merod doubled in another, and a bases loaded walk forced in the tying run. However, in the bottom of the fifth, Clarkson put up another six spot. Locklear opened the inning with a walk and scored on a double by Kent Wilson, who came in on passed ball to put Clarkson up 10-8. Colby Brouillette doubled in a run, Carpin singled in another, and a two-run error gave the Knight a 14-8 advantage. They would score one more in the sixth on a Brouillette sacrifice fly, making Ithaca's two runs in the seventh too little to make a difference.

Caleb Doyle scored four times and went 3-for-4 at the plate, Locklear was 3-for-3 with a pair of runs scored, Brouillette drove in three and scored twice, and Carpin was 2-for-4 with three RBI in game one.

Game two was the reverse of the first, as Ithaca was the team that raced out to a big lead in the early going. Buzz Shirley hit a three-run shot to left in the first to put the Bombers on the board, and Ithaca added four more in the second, including a two-run single by Garrett Callaghan. Clarkson got one back in the bottom of the second and then tallied three more in the bottom of the third. One run came in on a wild pitch and Jonathan Irons and Kent Wilson delivered back-to-back run-scoring singles to account for the other two runs.

Shirley singled in a run in the fourth, but Clarkson scored twice thanks to a two-run triple by Brouillette to make the score 8-6. Ithaca kept scoring, putting three more on the board in the fifth, with Shirley again driving in a pair. Clarkson's offense was quiet until the bottom of the seventh when Michael Mieczkowski plated two with a single up the middle.

Down to its last at bat in the bottom of the ninth and trailing by three, Clarkson put together a strong rally. Irons singled but was eliminated at second on a fielder's choice. Caleb Doyle followed with a double to score Kent Wilson and then came in on a double by Mieczkowski. Sean Gill drew a walk and Carpin singled to left to load the bases. Brouillette then lifted a fly ball to left that proved to be plenty deep to score Mieczkowski to tie the game. With the sun dropping below the horizon, the umpires and coaches convened and the game was called due to darkness.

Carpin finished 5-for-5 and Kent Wilson went 3-for-6. Doyle, Irons, Mieczkowski, and Brouillette each had two hits, with the latter two also driving in three runs. Kyle Locklear kept Clarkson in the game in the latter innings, allowing just a single and two walks in 4.2 innings of scoreless relief.

For Ithaca, Shirley drove in six on three hits and Jack Lynch was 4-for-6 with four runs scored in the second game.
