CU Baseball Drops Pair Versus Ithaca

Ithaca, NY – Late runs cost the Clarkson University Baseball team on Friday afternoon, as the Golden Knights gave up all of game one's runs in the final four innings and saw three runs in the final two frames of game two as the team dropped a conference doubleheader to Ithaca, 14-3 and 5-4.

The Golden Knights fell back below .500 overall, moving to 10-12 on the season with a 5-5 record in the Liberty League. Ithaca improved to 12-6 and 7-1. The two teams will play another doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Jack Phillips Stadium in Potsdam.

Clarkson struck first in the opener, scoring twice in the top of the third as Tommy Bianchi started things off with a two-out single to left-center. Colby Brouillette doubled down the left field line to put a pair in scoring position, which allowed Zachary Carpin to deliver a two-run double to right, putting the Knights up 2-0.

The advantage didn't last, though, as Ithaca loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom half of the inning. Buzz Shirley wore a pitch to force in a run for the Bombers, and Gil Merod followed with a two-run single to center to put Ithaca up 3-2. In the fourth, Mike Nauta singled and stole two bases, but his work on the base paths didn't matter as Louis Fabbo homered to left-center making the score 5-2. Merod singled in a run in the fifth and Matt Smith drove in another with a sacrifice fly, but Clarkson responded with a run in the top of the sixth when Jonathan Irons sent Mike Mieczkowski in on a ground out.

While Clarkson's third run tightened up the game briefly, Ithaca put things away with seven in the sixth, the big blast coming off the bat of Buzz Shirley as he hit a three-run homer.

Bianchi went 3-for-4 and Mieczkowski had two hits in three at bats for the Knights. Fabbo was 4-for-5 with three runs batted in, Shirley went 2-for-3 with four RBI, Merod was 2-for-4 with three RBI, and Nauta scored three runs for the Bombers in game one.

The scoreboard moved in the bottom of the first of game two when Garrett Callaghan hit a solo shot to center, but for the next few innings it was all Clarkson. The Knights put up two in the second as Kent Wilson singled in Robert Whalen and Evan Lira came home on a balk. In the third, Carpin and Mieczkowski had back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners, and Carpin came in on a wild pitch for a 3-1 Clarkson lead. In the fourth, Wilson singled, moved to second on a walk and then advanced to third after a double play, but another wild pitch gave the Knights' their fourth run of the game.

Ithaca chipped away in the next few innings, getting one run back on a sacrifice fly by Fabbo in the fifth and tying the game in the seventh on a wild pitch and error, making it 4-4. In the bottom of the eighth, Matt Fabian drove in what proved to be the game-winning run with a two-out single to right, plating Callaghan.

Glenn Stever was solid in seven innings on the mound, striking out six and Jake Phillips was saddled with the loss for the Knights by allowing one run in his lone inning of work. Buzz Shirley gave up 10 hits and struck out six in six frames, and Charlie Hammel gained the win for Ithaca, throwing three perfect innings of relief with six strikeouts.

Offensively, Wilson went 3-for-5 and both Carpin and Mieczkowski were 2-for-4 at the plate in game two. Alex Barker-Hook was 3-for-4 for Ithaca, and Callaghan went 1-for-2 with a pair of walks and scored twice.
