Ithaca Sweeps CU Softball in a Pair of Tight Games, 4-2 and 6-5

Ithaca, NY – Despite some solid pitching performances, the Clarkson University Softball team dropped a pair of tight conference contests on Friday afternoon, as the Golden Knights fell to Ithaca College 4-2 and 6-5 in Liberty League action.

The Golden Knights saw their record move to 14-8 overall and 6-4 in conference games, while Ithaca improved to 14-4 overall and 10-2 in league contests. The two teams will meet again Saturday afternoon at Scott Field in Potsdam.

The first game saw Kayla Robert extend her hitting streak to 28 games, but she went 0-for-4 in the nightcap to end the longest hitting streak in Clarkson history. The 28-game run was also tied for the 15th-longest reported hitting streak in Division III dating back to 1982.

In the opener, Clarkson struck first with a run in the top of the third inning as Olivia Zoeller singled with one out to begin the rally and Kayla Robert extended it after another out with a single through the left side to put runners on first and third. Maddie Brink then followed with a single to left to plate Zoeller, giving the Knights a 1-0 lead.

The advantage was short-lived, however, as Ithaca scored twice in the bottom half of the inning. Allison Dell'Orto drew a one-out walk and then was sent trotting home on a Julia Loffredo home run, the first long ball that Zoeller has given up in 2021.  Ithaca seemed poised to break the game open in the sixth as the Bombers loaded the bases with no one out and then got a two-run double from Daniella Mulvey to make the score 4-1. Zoeller got out of the jam, though, striking out the next three hitters to end the threat.

Clarkson picked up a run in the top of the seventh as Zoeller reached on an error and moved up a base following a walk to Kayla Robert. Brink again did her job by singling to right-center to score Zoeller, but that was all the offense the Knights would muster in their last at bat.

Zoeller finished with nine strikeouts in six innings, but allowed three walks and eight hits for four runs.

In game two, Ithaca scored two runs in the third, fourth, and sixth innings to take what appeared to be a commanding 6-0 lead. The Bombers scored first on a Dell'Orto single and then added another run on a passed ball in the third, then Dell'Orto delivered a two-run single in the fourth to make it 4-0. In the sixth, another passed ball put the Bombers up 5-0 and Loffredo singled in another for a 6-0 advantage.

Clarkson would not go quietly in the seventh, however, with most of the damage coming with one out. Maddie Brink led off with a single and then Katy Aldous and Emily McBath drew back-to-back one-out walks to load the bases. Rylee LeBourveau singled back to the pitcher to get one run home, and Bridget Twaits doubled to right-center to cut the lead in half at 6-3. Zoeller immediately singled through the left side to plate two more runs and put plenty of pressure on the Bombers, but Ithaca pitcher Riley Piromalli struck out the final two hitters to escape the jam and end the game.

Emily McBath took the loss for the Knights, allowing seven hits and walking five while whiffing eight in six innings. Both Twaits and Zoeller were 2-for-4 with two runs batted in apiece. For Ithaca, Dell'Orto did the damage with three runs batted in and Piromalli was strong in the circle, striking out seven against seven hits and three walks allowed in seven innings of work.
