Zoeller Spins Shutout, but Knights Split with Ithaca

Potsdam, NY – Junior Olivia Zoeller tossed her league-best sixth shutout of the season in the opener for the Clarkson University Softball team against Ithaca, but the Bombers came back in game two to split the Liberty League twin bill, with the Golden Knights taking game one, 3-0, and Ithaca winning game two, 7-0, Saturday afternoon at Scott Field.

The Golden Knights moved to 15-9 overall and 7-5 in the Liberty League while Ithaca saw its record go to 15-5 and 11-3. Clarkson is looking to makeup games against Skidmore midweek before taking on Union College next weekend in a four-game set.

In the opener, Zoeller and Ithaca pitcher Beth Fleming matched zeroes for the first five frames, though each had a little trouble early on. In the bottom of the first, Sarah Vaccaro hit a two-out double to put a runner in scoring position for the Knights, but Fleming retired the next hitter. In the bottom of the fourth, runners were on first and third with one out, and the bases were loaded with two down, but again Fleming wiggled out of the jam. In the top half of the fourth, Zoeller also was in a bit of trouble with a leadoff walk that was followed by a single, but a pop up and two straight strikeouts ended the threat.

Clarkson finally got on the board in the bottom of the sixth as Sarah Vaccaro singled up the middle with one out and then moved to third on a Kayla Robert single. Maddie Brink then hit a sacrifice fly to score the Knights' first run, but Clarkson was not finished. Alyssa Schaechinger singled in pinch-runner Molly Pezzano and came home herself on a single by Katy Aldous to make the score 3-0.

Zoeller finished with 12 strikeouts in seven innings, giving up only two hits and three walks for her 11th win of the season. Fleming took the loss, giving up seven hits and three earned runs over six frames, striking out five.

In game two, Zoeller was sent back out to the circle, but gave up a run in the top of the first when Gabby Laccona reached on a bunt single and then advanced around the bases on a steal, groundout and sacrifice fly. Things were quiet until the fourth when Haley Gaffney and Haley White hit back-to-back home runs to make it 3-0. The Bombers put the game away in the late innings as Gaffney hit a two-run double in the fifth and two more runs came across in the sixth.

Zoeller took the loss in game two, going four innings and giving up three hits and a walk while striking out four. Riley Page tossed two innings of relief and Emily McBath pitched a scoreless seventh for Clarkson. Riley Piromalli earned her ninth win of the year in game two for Ithaca, pitching to contact with only one strikeout yet allowing just three hits and a walk.
