Knights Earn First Conference Victory with 13-9 Win Over SLU

Canton, NY – For the second time in three days, the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team produced an impressive first-half defensive effort and rolled to a 13-9 Liberty League victory over St. Lawrence University.

The Golden Knights improved to 3-5 on the season and 1-3 in conference games while St. Lawrence saw its record evened at 2-2 overall and dropped to 1-2 in the Liberty League. The two teams will play once again on Saturday, with a start time of 1:00 pm at Hantz Field.

It took nearly 10 minutes for the Knights to break the opening scoreless knot, but Kyrsten Stone got things going for Clarkson at the 21:00 mark. Clarkson scored again less than three minutes later when Sydney Roderick found Grace Hagberg and the Knights tallied again at 13:21 when Roderick found Katie Sergeant. It took a yellow card for St. Lawrence to score its first goal, but the Knights steadily increased their advantage in the final minutes of the half, with Julia Lavarnway scoring one goal and assisting on two others in the final five-plus minutes.

Clarkson doubled up the Saints in shots (16-8) and shots on goal (11-5) while the defense caused seven of St. Lawrence's 13 turnovers in the first 30 minutes.

In the second half, the Saints put a scare into the Knights with three runs in a three-minute span, pulling to within two (7-5) at the 22:14 mark. Clarkson responded with two goals in the next five minutes as Roderick found Sergeant after a yellow card and then discovered Grace Hagberg in front at 17:12. Three minutes later freshman Madelynn Barnum scored on a free position shot to return the margin to five goals. St. Lawrence pulled to within four on three occasions, but the Knights had an answer each time.

Sydney Roderick led the team in points with six assists while Katie Sergeant found the back of the net for five goals. Julia Lavarnway scored four points on two goals and two assists, Madelynn Barnum scored three goals, Grace Hagberg added a pair of goals, and Sophie Mangino recorded two assists. Sarah Duhaime led the team with three groundballs and both Hagberg and Anna Patterson caused two turnovers. Emily Fischer stopped seven shots in the crease for Clarkson.

A couple of Clarkson's players edged up the all-time leaderboards on Friday. Graduate student Katie Sergeant moved into a ninth all-time in points (133 points) with five goals while junior Sydney Roderick claimed second place all-time at Clarkson in assists (81) in just 31 career games. Roderick is also just one point shy of entering the top 10 in scoring at Clarkson.
