Zoeller Strikes Out 16 and Adds Walk-Off in CU Softball Split Versus SLU

Potsdam, NY – Olivia Zoeller struck out 16 and delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh as the Clarkson University Softball team split with St. Lawrence for the second time in as many days, winning the first 3-2 and dropping the second game 5-4 Saturday afternoon at Scott Field.

The Golden Knights moved to 11-5 on the season and 6-2 in the Liberty League, while St. Lawrence saw its record go to 2-11 and 2-8. Clarkson is scheduled to face Plattsburgh State in a non-league doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon.

Clarkson got on the scoreboard first in the opener as Sarah Vaccaro hit a bullet to left-center to lead off the bottom of the second inning. The next inning saw Bridget Twaits lead off with an infield single and then advance to second on a ground out, allowing Kayla Robert's hard single up the middle to score Twaits and give Clarkson a 2-0 lead.

In the top of the sixth, St. Lawrence scored a pair of unearned runs, the last coming on a bloop single just behind second base that saw the middle infielders and center fielder converge with no one able to get to the ball. However, Clarkson finished off the game in the bottom of the seventh as Twaits singled to right and advanced to second on a passed ball, setting up the heroics for Olivia Zoeller as she punched a hit through the right side to score Twaits.

Twaits finished 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and Robert was 2-for-3. Zoeller was dominant again, striking out 16 batters and giving up just four hits and no walks for her eighth win of the season.

Game two saw the Knights bolt out to a 4-0 lead after three innings. Kayla Robert hit a bomb to straight-away center to drive in herself and Bridget Twaits to give Clarkson a 2-0 lead, and in the third an RBI groundout by Robert scored Twaits again and a throwing error allowed Olivia Zoeller to score from second on a foul out.

St. Lawrence scored three in the fourth to get back into the game, as Tori Rotundo doubled in a pair and then scored herself on a Carolyn Holran triple. In the fifth, the Saints tied the game on an error, but neither team could score again in the allotted seven innings, forcing the teams into extras. St. Lawrence got on the board in the top of the ninth as Rotundo doubled to left-center to make it 5-4. In the bottom half of the inning, Sam Short opened with a single and moved up to second with two outs on a passed ball, but a ground out ended the threat and the game.

Robert was the lone player for the Knights to record a multi-hit game, going 3-for-4 with a run and three runs batted in. Likewise, only Tori Rotundo had more than one hit for the Saints, going 2-for-4 with a run and three RBI.
