Knights Split Non-League Doubleheader at Plattsburgh

Plattsburgh, NY – Extra innings were required for both games of the doubleheader between the Clarkson University Softball team and Plattsburgh State and the two teams split the twin bill, as the Cardinals won the opener 7-6 and the Golden Knights claimed the nightcap 5-3.

The Golden Knights moved to 12-6 on the season while Plattsburgh's record pushed to 4-6. Clarkson is scheduled to take on Skidmore College this weekend in a four-game set.

In the first game, the Knights found themselves down by four in the early going as Plattsburgh pushed that many across in the bottom of the second with the key hit coming from Alexa Murray, a two-run single. However, the Knights clawed their way back with two in the top of the third as Olivia Zoeller tripled in Alyssa Schaechinger and Bridget Twaits. The Knights scored three more in the sixth, the first on a Kayla Robert triple that scored Zoeller. Robert then scored on a double by Sarah Vaccaro and Vaccaro came around on a single by Schaechinger to put the Green and Gold up 5-4, only to see Plattsburgh tie the game in the bottom half of the inning.

After a scoreless seventh, Sarah Vaccaro put Clarkson back up by a run when Vaccaro homered to left, but a fielder's choice in bottom of the eighth tied the game and Bella Spadinger played hero for the Cardinals with a single through the right side for a walk-off win.

Vaccaro went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two more driven in while Schaechinger was 2-for-4. Emily McBath took the loss for the Knights, striking out four in 7.1 innings. For Plattsburgh, Alexa Murray was 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored while Kaitlin Smith went 3-for-3 with a pair of runs scored.

In game two, Clarkson got on the board first as Bridget Twaits doubled to open the game and then came home on a miscue by the Plattsburgh third baseman as Olivia Zoeller reached on the error. The Knights would add another run in the fifth when Kayla Robert singled home Zoeller, but Plattsburgh responded with two in the bottom half of the inning. Kelsey Waite scored Alexandra Clifford with a single for the first run, and Waite then scored on a bunt to tie the game 2-2.

In the sixth, Plattsburgh pushed a run across for its first lead of the game. Rebecca Diller led off with a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch, but the next two hitters were retired on strikeouts. Waite came through again for Plattsburgh, singling to right to make the score 3-2.

The Knights tied the game up in the top of the seventh when Twaits and Zoeller reached reached on errors. After a foul out and s steal, Kayla Robert reached on a fielder's choice as Zoeller moved to third and Twaits was safe at the plate, making it 3-3. In the ninth, the Knights broke through with a pair of runs as Sarah Vaccaro reached on a one-out double and Kayla Robert singled to short. Maddie Brink followed with a single to score Vaccaro and Katy Aldous then lifted a ball to center to score Robert on a sac fly. Olivia Zoeller then pitched a one-two-three ninth to close out the contest.

Zoeller won the game in relief for Clarkson, striking out 10 in four innings of relief of Riley Page, who had allowed just four hits in the first five innings. Twaits went 3-for-5 with two runs scored while Zoeller, Robert, and Brink each had two hits. Kristina Maggiacomo was the tough-luck loser for Plattsburgh, striking out 10 in nine innings.
