Clarkson Rally Comes Up One Goal Short at Ithaca, 12-11

Ithaca, NY – A furious comeback over the final 18 minutes came up one goal short as the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team dropped a 12-11 decision to Ithaca College, opening Liberty League play on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights saw their record fall to 2-4 overall and 0-1 in league games while Ithaca edged up to 3-1 and 1-0. Clarkson is scheduled to play a makeup game at Vassar College on Wednesday afternoon.

Clarkson was behind 7-2 midway through the second and was down 10-3 at the 8:45 mark in the third quarter when John Sramac scored for the Bombers, but the Knights did not fold despite the long odds. Jay Considine found Conor Bartlett just 16 seconds after the Sramac goal and then scored three times in the final three minutes as Matt Reilly tallied at 3:06 and Billy Bergan scored twice, including a goal with 45 seconds left, to pull Clarkson back to an 11-7 deficit.

In the fourth quarter, the Knights kept up the pressure as Bryan Penney scored at 13:43, Conor Bartlett scored while the Knights were up a player at 12:53, and Alex Sharon scored at the 10:22 mark to make it 11-10. Clarkson finally hit a wall offensively as Ithaca maintained its one goal lead until scoring with 2:55 remaining. Penney found the back of the net with just nine seconds to go to make the score 12-11, and Penney scooped up the groundball on the ensuing faceoff, but there wasn't enough time for the Knights to get off one more shot.

Penney led the team with five points on three goals and two assists while Bartlett scored three times. Bergan scored twice and Pierce Currie added a goal and four groundballs. Ryan Canham also caused three turnovers. On face-offs, Clarkson was dominant, with Matthew Hansen winning 12 of his 14 draws and Riley Holzman taking seven of his 12 chances. Matt Yonko played well in the Clarkson crease with 16 saves.

For Ithaca, Jake Erickson led the offense with seven points on two goals and five assists, and Connor Brumfield scored four times. Conor Caiazza had seven groundballs and Demetri Lowry was busy on defense with five groundballs and five caused turnovers. Connor Thornton stopped two-thirds of the shots he faced, making 22 saves and allowing 11 goals.
