Phelps and Gearhart Combine for 36 in Knights Win Against SLU, 77-63

Canton, NY – Senior Jason Phelps scored 19 points and Blake Gearhart added 17 points off the bench as the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team got back on the winning track with a 77-63 victory over St. Lawrence University on Tuesday night.

The Golden Knights improved to 3-3 on the season while the Saints opened the year with a loss. Clarkson will play a home-and-home against Norwich University this weekend, playing in Potsdam on Friday and then on the road on Sunday.

The Saints never led in Tuesday's game, tying the game once in the early moments, as Clarkson's defense played well in the opening five minutes. Nick Budesheim scored in the paint on a layup at the 15:14 mark to put the Knights up 9-3 and Clarkson expanded that margin to nine when Gearhart hit a 3-pointer with 13:44 to go in the half. St. Lawrence came back to pull within four midway through the period, but Clarkson responded with a couple of quick baskets to push the lead to nine once again. St. Lawrence hit a pair of 3-pointers a few minutes later to get within three on two separate occasions, but Joe Lucas, Chris Hulbert, and Phelps each hit 3-pointers in the final three minutes to stretch the gap to 14 points before finally settling for a 12-point lead at the break.

Two quick buckets from the Saints brought the gap down to seven in the first minute of the second half, but Clarkson responded with a 12-0 run over a stretch of five minutes to change the outlook of the game. Another 3-pointer from Gearhart at 10:31 put the Knights up by 22 for the first time and Clarkson pushed its lead to as many as 24 four minutes later when Phelps hit one from long-range. Roburt Welch hit a 3-pointer at 3:45 to keep the margin at 24, but over the final few minutes, St. Lawrence was able to reduce its deficit to the teens.

Phelps finished with a team-best 19 points, shooting 5-for-12 from the field with three 3-pointers to go along with a 6-for-6 effort from the free throw line. Gearhart had another impressive game coming off the bench, scoring 17 on 7-for-13 shooting while adding in 10 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals. Hulbert also had 10 points and four steals while Reese Swedberg contributed 12 points and seven boards.

For St. Lawrence, Liam McDonald had 19 points and five rebounds, shooting 5-for-9 from the 3-point arc, and Jake Scotnicki added in 17 points. Brandon Arnold also had 13 points while Luke Hicks grabbed 11 rebounds while being held to two points.
