Knights Split with Potsdam, Zoeller Tosses One-Hitter

Potsdam, NY – Another stellar outing from junior Olivia Zoeller gave the Clarkson University Softball team a win in the opener of Thursday's doubleheader, but the Golden Knights had to settle for a split against SUNY Potsdam, winning the first game 8-0 and dropping the nightcap 5-1 at Scott Field.

The Golden Knights moved to 3-3 on the season and are off until next Wednesday when they host SUNY Canton. Potsdam opens the season at 1-1.

Zoeller pitched to contact a bit more than in her opening no-hitter against St. Lawrence, but she nearly repeated the feat. Zoeller was flawless through the first four, but gave up a two-out single in the top of the fifth to finish with a one-hitter.

Clarkson's offense shortened the game to five innings thanks to a productive offense that showed the ability to score in a number of ways. Zoeller led off the game with a walk, moved to second on a stolen bases, advanced to third on a groundout, and then finished the circuit by scoring on a wild pitch for a 1-0 lead after the first. In the bottom of the second, Clarkson strung hits together to push three across, as Zoeller doubled down the line to score one, and Bridget Twaits followed with a single to right to plate two more. One inning later, Maddie Brink led off with a solo home run to make it 5-0 and in the fourth the Knights once again put a barrage of hits together to score three runs. Kayla Roberts singled home Twaits, Sam Short delivered a run-scoring single to score Roberts, and Alyssa Schaechinger ripped a single off the pitcher's foot to allow Amanda Riley to score.

Twaits, Robert, and Brink each went 2-for-3 in the game, while Zoeller struck out five and allowed just a single hit with no walks in five innings of work for her second win of the season.

Game two appeared to be headed in the same direction as Clarkson scored once in the bottom of the first. Sam Short reached on a one-out single and was moved to third when Sarah Vaccaro doubled. Kayla Robert then reached on an error to load the bases, and a deep fly ball from Maddie Brink scored Short. That was all the offense that Clarkson would muster, however, besides sporadic threatening base runners.

Potsdam also had chances in its first few at bats, but it wasn't until the fourth that the Bears tied the game. Kathleen Tompkins reached on an error and moved all the way to third on a pair of wild pitches. With two outs, Tompkins was sent home thanks to a single from Vanessa Brandt to make the score 1-1.

Two innings later, an error, fielder's choice, and walk loaded the bases but another fielder's choice at home kept the bases loaded with one out. Morgan Brown then singled in a run to make it 2-1, but two batters later Anna Grottola singled to left to plate one. A pair of miscues followed on the same play, allowing two more runs to cross and Grottola ended up on third, putting Potsdam up 5-1. Clarkson put runners on in the sixth and seventh, but none came around the score.

Clarkson had seven different players with one hit in the second game and Emily McBath and Riley Page combined to strike out six.
