Clarkson Bats Awaken in Doubleheader Sweep Against SUNY Canton

Potsdam, NY – Scoring 22 runs in just eight innings, the Clarkson University Softball team's offense was alive on Tuesday as the Golden Knights won a pair against SUNY Canton, 9-0 and 13-2, at Scott Field.

The Golden Knights improved to 5-3 on the season while Canton fell to 1-2. Clarkson is scheduled for a pair of doubleheaders against RIT this weekend, though expected inclement weather may shift some of the times and dates.

In the opener, junior Olivia Zoeller did not have her normal pinpoint control, but her stuff was consistent enough to keep Canton off balance, allowing just one hit along with three walks with eight strikeouts over five innings of shutout pitching. Clarkson gave Zoeller all the offense she would need in the bottom of the second inning, but the Knights tacked on two runs in the third and six in the fourth to shorten the game to five innings.

Amanda Riley drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the second and was replaced by Molly Pezzano on the base paths. Pezzano then stole second and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt before trotting home on a double by Katy Aldous. In the third, Clarkson scored twice as Olivia Zoeller singled, stole second, and moved to third on a grounder. Kayla Robert then singed Zoeller home and scored herself when Riley singled to center, putting Clarkson up 3-0 through three innings.

The Knights broke the game open in the fourth with six runs, five of which were unearned. Aldous walked and came around to score on Riley LeBourveau's sacrifice bunt, as an errant throw allowed LeBourveau to move all the way to third. Zoeller doubled to push another run across to make it 5-0, but the next two Knights were retired. Clarkson then enjoyed some two-out magic as the team scored four more times in the inning. Robert singled home Zoeller, Riley doubled in Robert, Maddie Brink scored on a passed ball, and Riley came around on a single up the middle from Alyssa Schaechinger.

Four players recorded multi-hit performances in the abbreviated game, as Zoeller, Robert, and Brink each went 2-for-3 and Riley was 2-for-2 with a walk and a pair of runs batted in. Zoeller tossed her third complete-game shutout of the season, and second straight one-hitter.

In game two, Canton got on top in the first inning as Angelina LoPiccolo reached on an error and then came around on a single through the left side by Jordan Knapp. However, the Kangaroos lead was brief, as Clarkson responded with four runs in the bottom half of the frame. Zoeller singled and was followed by a Sam Short single through the right side. After a pop up, Kayla Robert loaded the bases with a fielder's choice as a dropped ball at second kept everyone safe. Maddie Brink then cleared the bases with a double to put the Knights up 4-1.

The bats were alive in the bottom of the third for Clarkson as the Knights recorded 10 hits and nine runs in the frame. Robert led off with a double, stole third, and then came home on a fielder's choice. Becky Kennedy-Titsworth doubled in a run and a groundout by LeBourveau scored another run. Zoeller then singled through the left side to plate Kennedy-Titsworth, but the big strikes were yet to come. Sam Short walked to put two runners on and Sarah Vaccaro pushed both across with a double to left. Kayla Robert then homered to right-center to make it 12-1. After a Maddie Brink single, the Knights received three consecutive pinch-hit singles from Sydney Russo, Carrie Speer, and Emily McBath, with the last drive in Clarkson's final run of the game.

Canton scored one in the top of the fourth, but the Roos went down in order in the fifth to end the game.

Riley Page picked up her second win of the season, allowing four hits and a walk while whiffing four in five frames. Offensively, four players had multi-hit games again, as Zoeller was 2-for-3, Robert was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two driven in, Brink was 2-for-3 with three runs batted in and two more scored, and Bridget Twaits was 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI.
