Knights Fall at 12th-Ranked St. John Fisher

Rochester, NY – A day after sweeping St. Lawrence in its season-opener, the Clarkson University Softball team found itself on the short end of a sweep, falling to 12th-ranked St. John Fisher 2-1 and 6-2 on Monday afternoon.

The Golden Knights dropped to 2-2 on the season while the Cardinals improved to 4-0. Clarkson will look to get back on the winning track on Thursday when the team hosts crosstown rival SUNY Potsdam at Scott Field.

Two top-notch pitchers dueled in the opener as the first game required extra innings. St. John Fisher scored in its first look at Olivia Zoeller, as Emily Trotman led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt before coming around on a single up the middle by Sammie Torlish. Although the Cardinals would continue to threaten with another hit in the inning, Zoeller settled in and allowed only a handful of hits over the next seven-plus innings. Clarkson threatened Trotman in the second when Kayla Robert was hit by a pitch and Maddie Brink singled for a first-and-third situation, but the Cardinals hurler wiggled out of the jam with a double play to keep the Knights scoreless.

Clarkson eventually pushed a run across to tie the game at 1-1 in the top of the sixth as Zoeller reached on an infield single, but was erased on a fielder's choice by Molly Pezzano. However, Sarah Vaccaro belted a drive to center to plate Pezzano and tie the game.

The two pitchers exchanged zeroes for the next few frames, but the Cardinals scored in the bottom of the ninth when Maddie Klidonas reached on a single, advanced to second on a passed ball and then moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. A sacrifice fly scored Klidonas to give St. John Fisher the walk-off win.

Zoeller struck out 11 in 8.2 innings, giving up eight hits and two walks in the tough-luck loss. Trotman pitched to contact in her nine innings of work, striking out two with 12 fly outs and 10 ground outs around six hits.

St. John Fisher's offense broke out in the second game as the Cardinals scored twice in the second thanks to three straight hits and then two more in the third on a two-run homer by Rachel Evans. The Cardinals tacked on single runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to make the score 6-0. After recording just a single hit through the first five frames, the Golden Knights finally got on the board in the sixth. Sarah Vaccaro got things started with a one-out single to left-center, but Kayla Robert delivered the big blow with a two-run shot to right-center, pulling the Knights within four at 6-2. However, that was all Clarkson could muster as the team went down in order with three ground outs in the top of the seventh.

Riley Page and Emily McBath split the game, tossing three innings apiece and combining to give up 11 hits over six frames for Clarkson. Jess Patterson earned the win with seven strong innings, striking out two but giving up just four hits and three walks.
