Wilson's Sac Fly Ends 17-Inning Marathon for Knights

Potsdam, NY – Sophomore Kent Wilson's deep sacrifice fly to center field ended the Clarkson University Baseball team's longest game ever under the tutelage of Jim Kane in the bottom of the 17th, as the Golden Knights outlasted St. Lawrence 3-2 Sunday afternoon at Jack Phillips Stadium.

The Golden Knights picked up their first win of the season and moved to 1-3, while St. Lawrence felt to 0-3. Clarkson will head to Cortland on Wednesday to take on the Red Dragons in a doubleheader.

Clarkson's pitching was up to task on Sunday, striking out 22 batters in 17 innings of work and allowing just two earned runs. The Knights' offense also was solid, save for the 24 runners that were left on base.

The Knights scored twice in the bottom of the second inning to get things going as Mike Nee reached on an error and Colby Brouillette drew a walk. After a line out, Kent Wilson singled to second to load the bases, and a Joe Stockman single to shortstop plated Nee to make the score 1-0. Jonathan Irons then hit another ball to second to push Brouillette across.

Starting pitcher Griffin Tubbs was flawless through the first three frames, but St. Lawrence touched him for a run in the fourth as the Saints loaded the bases with none out thanks to two hits and a walk. A fielder's choice to third base allowed one run to come in, but two more outs quickly followed to end the threat. St. Lawrence tied the game in the top of the ninth when Cronin singled up the middle and moved to second on a sac bunt and then to third on a fly to left. Nicholas Butler scored Cronin when he laced a 3-2 offering from Tubbs over Tito's head at third to tie the game.

In extra frames, Clarkson certainly had opportunities, loading the bases in the bottom of the ninth, as well as the 10th, 12th, and 15th innings, only to come up empty. That wouldn't be the case in the 17th, however, as Michael Mieczkowski and Nee opened the inning with back-to-back hard hit singles. The duo moved up a base each on a sacrifice bunt and Michael Tito was intentionally walked to load the bases. Wilson drive to center was probably the hardest hit ball all day, as the shot was hit to deep center, allowing Mieczkowski to score easily on the sacrifice fly.

Mieczkowski, Tito, and Wilson each had two hits for Clarkson, while Nee reached base four times thanks to his 17th inning hit and three walks. Tubbs was strong and came up just an out shy of a complete game, but he still struck out 10 and allowed only four hits in 8.2 innings of work. Jake Phillips pitched 2.2 innings of relief and stuck out five and Glenn Stever tossed 3.2 innings, whiffing six along the way. Derrick Lewis gained the win with two scoreless frames, striking out one.

For St. Lawrence, Cronin was the lone player with a multi-hit game, going 2-for-8 at the dish.
